For the chemical industry, safety is a top priority. Under the Responsible Care® performance
initiative, ACC companies are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of their workers, their contractors,
the communities in which they operate and the consumers who use their products. Responsible Care is the
chemical industry’s commitment to continued progress toward a goal of no accidents, injuries or harm to
human health and the environment from its products and operations.
Safety demands continuous improvement. Through Responsible Care, ACC companies have been
tracking and reporting their safety performance for the past 20 years and have achieved significant improvements
in that time period.
To build on this legacy of progress, ACC has launched its new Responsible Care Process Safety Code,
industry’s collective commitment to safety throughout its processing operations and management systems.
The Process Safety Code expands upon industry’s long tradition of safety performance:
• The Code supplements the existing process safety requirements contained within the Responsible Care
Management System® (RCMS®) and RC14001® technical specifications, which offer companies an integrated,
structured approach to manage and enhance environmental, health, safety and security performance.
• It also complements existing regulatory requirements, such as OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM)
standard and EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) standard.
The Process Safety Code is mandatory for all ACC member and Responsible Care Partner companies. When
implemented alongside the integrated Responsible Care management system, the Process Safety Code will
advance the chemical industry’s commitment to safely manage its facilities and operations.
