ESL 501 - Unit 2.6.

2 - Citation Workshop

Objectives: Students will be able to...


● Create in-text citations and a references page in their discipline
● Format your diagnostic essay using one of the major style introduced in this lesson
● Recognize elements in citations and be able to identify missing elements in machine-
generated citations.
Teacher directions

[Preclass]

● Have the students complete the doodle poll so the instructor is aware of what styles
each student will use and how many students will use each style.
● Have students find two of the sources for their annotated bibliography

[5 minutes] - Grouping up

The teacher will ask students to complete the doodle poll (if they have not complete the poll
before class). Tell students today they will practice creating citations using styles used in their
fields. If the students are unaware of their citation style they will be put in an APA group or
whatever group needs an extra member. If there is one student using a particular style they can
join a group and present their unique style within their group of three. Put the students using
similar citation styles in groups (three students) for the following activities.

Part I - Reference Generation. [ total time: 40 minutes]

[10 minutes] - Assembling background information for reference generation

The teacher will ask students to open the reference info gathering and construction worksheet.
Student will collect the information (Who, What, Where, When, *How) for two of their references
for their research essay.

[5 minutes] - Reference creation

The teacher will tell students to open the reference style resources website and use the
guidelines on the website to create two references in the reference info gathering and
construction worksheet. Students will review their reference citations in their groups to check for
errors. Upon completion of their citations each student will share one reference citation in the
class google doc.

[10 Minutes] - What’s wrong mini quiz


The teacher will open the mini quiz powerpoint. Get the students to identify the errors in the
reference. *Make sure that you only use the slides that are applicable to the citation styles
present in your class.

Part II - In text citations. [total time: 30 minutes]

[10 minutes] - Powerpoint presentation

The teacher presents the Integral vs. Non integral citation powerpoint presentation.

[10 minutes] - In text citation creation

The teacher tells the student to open up the final version of their diagnostic essay and the in text
citation worksheet. The students will generate a reference for their diagnostic prompt. The
students will then copy/paste a section of their diagnostic essay into the in text citation
worksheet and insert an in text citation into the diagnostic essay section. Once completed, each
group will review their in text citation within their group and then choose one to paste into the
class google doc for further discussion.

[10 minutes] - Class discussion

The teacher will tell the groups to present their selected passage and, as a class,
compare/contrast their in text citation styles.

Part III - Formatting [total time: 10 minutes]

The teacher will tell the students to open the reference style resources website through the
formatting worksheet to format the final version of their diagnostic essays. Student will research
the format requirements of their citation style and format their diagnostic essay according to the
format requirements.

Homework - Citation research


Each member of their group to research one of the following questions/common issues in the
online style guide and write a solution and email it to the teacher. (5 minutes)
● Same author presented multiple sources in the same year?
● Which author comes first when there’s multiple authors?
● What if there is no author?
● What if the source is in another language?

Student directions

[5 minutes] - Grouping up

Complete the doodle poll (if they have not complete the poll before class). Today we will
practice creating citations using styles used in your field. If you are unaware of your citation
style you will be put in an APA group or whatever group needs an extra member. If you are the
only student using a particular style you can join a group and present your unique style within
your group of three.

[10 minutes] - Assembling background information for reference generation

Open the reference info gathering and construction worksheet. Collect the information (Who,
What, Where, When, *How) for two of your references for your research essay.

Please open the Integral vs. Non integral citation powerpoint presentation.

[10 minutes] - In text citation creation

Open up the final version of your diagnostic essay and the in text citation worksheet. Please
generate a reference for their diagnostic prompt. Then copy/paste a section of your diagnostic
essay into the in text citation worksheet and insert an in text citation into the diagnostic essay
section. Once completed, each group will review their in text citations within their group and
then choose one to paste into the class google doc for further discussion.

[10 minutes] - Class discussion

Each group will present their selected passage and, as a class, compare/contrast their in text
citation styles.

Part III - Formatting [total time: 10 minutes]

Open the reference style resources website through the formatting worksheet to format the final
version of your diagnostic essays. Research the format requirements of your citation style and
format your diagnostic essay according to the format requirements. * If you are concerned
about class time this can be assigned for homework.
