Curriculum
The Master's programme focuses on the relationship
between culture and media in a number of areas, such
as:
problems in representation of culture through media
ethical aspects of filming/photography in "other"
cultures
the significance of ethnographic films and
photography for social and cultural anthropology
virtual cultural research, online communities and
social networks
the development of media in "indigenous" or "native"
diaspora and non-Western communities
the influence of new media environments on
cultures, gender identity and political activism online CONTACT

Educational organisation
The programme is a combination of e-learning and in-
house learning, with five main units:
distance e-learning modules
four two-week in-house workshops
an internship in a TV production company, film
festival, ethnological museum, film archive or other
related fields
a short film or media project
the Master's thesis and/or film project
Internships
An internship of nine weeks is to be completed during
the third semester. Programme advisers will assist
students in finding an appropriate internship.

Course objectives
1. The programme is intended to enable students to
gain deeper competence in social-anthropological
theory and methods in the area of visual anthropology
and media anthropology, giving them the capability to
conduct scientific work primarily in media and
preparing for specific professional fields. In addition,
the students will develop in-depth socio-anthropology-
based practical media competence, leading to an
understanding of regional (focus on Africa and Asia)
and global media realities. In addition, the course
design ensures acquisition of gender-related
competencies.
2. Those active in professional fields of the media
industry can gain additional visual and media
anthropological knowledge in this advanced Master's
degree course. Professional perspectives for school-
leavers provided by an advanced Master's degree
programme in visual and media anthropology include,
in particular, positions in cultural and social science-
oriented TV, print and online media areas as directors
in television and film production firms as well as in
management functions or as curators at film festivals,
in film archives, museums or cultural institutions with
media presentation concepts. The advanced Master's
studies in visual and media anthropology provide
training for future activities as experts in visual
anthropology (ethnographic film, ethnographic
photography) as well as in the following areas:
editor-in-chief, author, director at culturally or
scientifically oriented TV broadcasters or film
production companies and online multimedia/video
platforms and journals
press and media, publication-related positions,
marketing
online databases and film archives, documentary film
festivals
museums
adult education
universities and non-university scientific institutions
non-governmental organisations
cultural exchange
international art and presentation operations
research and teaching in scientific facilities

CMS-Online-Modules - Course content, literature,
digital media and assignments are presented online via
a clearly arranged Content Management System
(CMS);
Learning Management System - LMS Blackboard - The
LMS Blackboard is a text-based communication tool
with weekly discussions via the discussion board. The
discussion board allows students and lecturer to
present ideas, presentations and essays online and
with a flexible time frame. These are presented to their
lecturers and fellow students;
3D-classroom (Edunation Island, Second Life
Software)
Tuition fees
Tuition fees are 5,990 EUR per year of study (2,995
EUR per semester). Please note that these figures may
change slightly before next October.
Enrolment fees
Approx. 290 EUR
The fee includes a semester ticket covering public
transport in the Berlin metropolitan area.

Participants should hold at least an undergraduate or
first degree (BA, MA, Diploma, etc.).
Participants must submit proof of a minimum of one
year of work experience (internship, jobs, projects)
subsequent to their undergraduate or first degree.
This work experience should be related to the first
degree or to media domains.
Proficiency in English (both written and spoken
fluency) is a prerequisite.
