™ PROTECTION CLASS CT DETAIL

Since, PS class CT’s are selected for protection purpose, there is no need for burden calculation at rated conditions;
however it should be ensured that at plant fault level, CT’s do not saturate. Hence the knee-point voltage of CT’s shall
be designed as follows:

Vk > 2 * If (Rct + 2Rl), where:

Vk = KNEE POINT VOLTAGE OF CT

If = FAULT CURRENT IN CT SECONDARY
= [SYSTEM FAULT CURRENT / CT RATIO] * SAFETY FACTOR

Calculation of If in CT secondary side:

Input Parameters for Calculation:
1. SYSTEM FAULT LEVEL of 40 kA for 3 Sec.
2. Design Safety Factor = 10%

If in CT secondary side = [ 40000 / (2100/1) ] * 1.1

= 20.95 A

Calculation of Vk at maximum fault current and maximum design value of Rct:

Input Parameters for Calculation:
1. Maximum Design Value of Rct = 6 Ohms at 75 oC
2. Maximum Lead Resistance Rl = 0.5 Ohm
3. If in CT secondary = 20.95 A

Vk > 2 * If * [Rct + 2 Rl]

> 2 * 20.95 * [6 + 1]
> 293.33V…………………………………………………………………. [Calculated at Rct of 6 Ohms]

The Rct value is subject to change and shall be confirmed by the CT manufacturer and hence the value of Vk shall be
accordingly governed by the above formulae. In any case, the CT shall be designed to have Vk such that it does not
saturate at system fault level of 40 kA for 3 Seconds.
