EME 601: Introduction to Instructional Design

Instructional Design Process Model for Granth Vidyalay
Dr. Michelle Frankich
April 26th, 2017
 Setting
Granth Vidyalay is a government-aided school located in the remote village
of Dhanu in Maharshtra, India. It was established with the sole purpose of
providing quality education to children with no access to schools.
Established in the year 2001, Granth Vidyalay has come a long way from
being a small-scale school serving minorities to catering to a large group of
children who are keen on making their own path for the future. The school
mostly attracts the rural crowd and is today known to be as one of the best
government English school in Dhanu.
The education level in India is divided into four categories.
 Secondary School Certificate (SSC)
 Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)
 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
 International Baccalaureate (IB)
The Granth Vidyalay currently follows the SSC education pattern and was
granted ‘B+’ rating by the Ministry of Education, Maharashtra. Granth
Vidyalay follow the school mission, “A School Teaching for a Better
Tomorrow.” This promotes the school as engaging and effective in delivering
instructions to students in areas of their excellence.
The school admits students on merit basis. Along with this, the students also
must go through an interview. Currently, the school starts from grade 1
through grade 10. The school staff currently employs 54 members including
the support staff. Each grade is followed by three teachers and 1 support
staff. Along with this, each grade is divided in divisions A, B, and C. For
example, grade 1 consist of 3 classes. 1-A, 1-B, and 1-C. There are 9 subjects
which are thought in all the classes as per the grade requirement.
The recruitment of teachers is strictly based on merit. The minimum
requirement for employment is a Bachelor’s degree in Education. The
teachers before being employed are made to go through an interview with
the Board of Trustees and are also invited as substitutes to teach before
scoring the job.
The individual characteristics required by the teachers at a government
school are almost the same. But every school has its individuality and that is
what the Granth Vidyalay believes. Its teachers are not only required to have
the basic skills that are required but also, they should have the sense of
proper application of instruction, student based projects and valuable
insights. All this is required for the success of the school and to see the its
motto come alive.
 The Problem
As mentioned earlier, the school follows the traditional educational SSC
level for its students. With the growing competitive times and private
schools coming up, it was decided that the school be accredited as a CBSE
school. This transition requires transformation within various departments
of the school but the main focus stands out to be recruitment of valuable
teachers and merit based students and quality of education as per the level
of requirement of the CBSE board.
 Current Model
Currently the school follows no training model as the idea of training models
and instructional designing has not seen light in the rural areas. After some
thorough research the board decided to instill a training model which would
make planning and implementing course work in class easier for teachers
and simultaneously help the students achieve a quality level of education
that is required by a CBSE student.
 Ideal Model
After conducting a thorough needs assessment of the Granth Vidyalay, it
was found that an instructional model focusing on students will be designed
along with a model required for the recruitment of teachers who can follow
the new CBSE syllabus.
It was decided that a new department in the school system would be
introduced which would consist of professionally trained instructional
designers who would develop a new model keeping in mind the
requirements of the Indian education system and its students.

The new model consisted of the following steps:
 Observe Student Background: Since the school hires students from
various parts of area they all come from different background,
observing the background of each student in the classroom will give
the teacher an insight on where the student comes from and where
she/he currently stands.

 Analyze Student Requirement: The first step that every teacher will
take in the class is to analyze the current academic standing of each
student. For this purpose, each student will be provided a set of
questionnaires which will be required to be completed on the very
first day. This questionnaire will consist of queries from various
subjects. Each question set will be designed keeping in mind the grade
the student expects to be admitted.

 Analyze Results: After the completion of the questionnaire, the

teacher will analyze the result of each student. This thorough
analyzation will the teacher to determine the current academic
standing of each of its student which will prove to be helpful in the
next step.

 Conduct Needs Requirement: Once the teacher has the knowledge of

the academic standing of the students, she/he will need to conduct a
needs requirement in classroom for the sole purpose of providing the
students as per their expectations. The need requirement will differ
from class to class. From grade 1-5, this will be conducted with parents
and from grade 6-10 will be conducted with the students.

 Develop a Course Plan: Developing the course plan or the outline

which is to be followed will need to be designed and submitted. This
will be beneficial for the teacher to keep in mind the time allocation
for each topic and what she/he needs to get ready for the upcoming
lesson.

 Develop Content: Developing the content is one of the most important

part of the model. Content is what the teacher is going to put forth in
front of the student and this is what the students will grasp. The
content will require to be developed as per the requirement of the
students.

 Develop Strategies: Requirement for each student in a classroom is

different. The teacher will need to come up with strategies to
implement the content in a uniform way which caters to all the
students.

 Collect Resources: Once the content and the strategies are locked in
place, various resources that will be required for the implementation
will have to collected.

 Implement Content and Strategies: The implementation of the content

will play a crucial part in the process if educating the children. Once
done this cannot be back wheeled but only improved. The teacher will
have to make sure that the content developed is thoroughly
implemented and the students understand the content.

 Evaluate Performance: Performance of each student will be recorded

and evaluated. The teacher will have to think of method and the
resources required for the evaluation process.

 Collect Feedback: Feedback should be collected at least once a week

for each subject. This will help the teacher as to what the students
have grasped, the effectiveness of the content and this will pave way
for any further improvement required.
 Revision and Revise: As per the feedback and the evaluation,
necessary changes should be made as per requirement.

This model is highly inspired by the Gerlach and Ely Model and fits perfect
for the new competitive syllabus of the school. Steps 1 through 4 in the
Granth Vidyalay Instructional Model will be required to be conducted twice
a year.
With the newly changed syllabus new teachers were recruited and thorough
training was provided to each of them. The recruitment process was
changed and a degree with Master’s or a Post-Graduation was preferred but
not required. Just like the students, the teachers before the confirmation of
their employment were given a written examination. On being hired, she/he
would meet the Human Resource Head and together go through the policies
and procedures. Subsequently, the employee would require the
acknowledgement of the terms and policies and be provided a copy of the
same.
Following this, the employee would be provided with schedule for the entire
year. This would include meetings, important school events, field trips. Next
the teacher will meet with the department head of the subject that she/he
will be teaching. The focus of this will be on the content that the employee
will need to follow. The teacher will be provided with a support staff who
will briefly inform about the in and out of the school. The support staff will
be with the newly appointed teacher for a duration of 6 months and will
report the learnings to the head of the subject department concerned.
On the job training will be conducted twice a year where all the staff and
teachers will come together and get to know of any new developments
made in the field of education. This will also include the introduction of
newly used technology in classrooms for various purposes.
Following the training, the teachers will be required to apply the new model
which was developed by the ID team. They are provided training on the do’s
and don’ts of the model to get exceptional classroom results.
 Conclusion
The Granth Vidyalay Instructional Model is solely focused on students to
bring out the best results. The newly designed model is a challenge to follow
since never have the school applied the use of any models. But once applied
and followed, it will be much easier to let the students grasp the content.
The step-by-step process of the model will provide the instructors (teachers)
with all the assistance they need pre-instruction and post-instruction. Along
with this, the new model focuses on evaluation and feedback which will be
used to make any necessary changes.
The change from no model to the application of a systematic model in
classroom will be slow but effective. Overall, the new Granth Vidyalay
Instruction Model will be highly effective and will bring the desired results
that the school wishes to see in classroom. This will start the trend of
utilizing systematic models in school curriculums.
