be a teacher for as long as I can remember. In my youth, I went to Red Pine Elementary, Dakota
Hills Middle School, Eagan High School, and finished out my high school years at the School of
Environmental Studies. I attended Winona State University and pursued my passion for teaching
as an elementary education major with minors in child advocacy studies and reading instruction.
I have always dreamed to be the teacher students remember as making a positive difference in
their lives.
Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by children. My mom ran a daycare out of our
home. Initially I saw the daycare as a constant opportunity to play with friends; as I matured, it
became an opportunity to teach and do projects with the pre-K children. After graduating from
high school, I encountered new opportunities. I was a nanny for two young boys my first summer
of college. Following that summer I began my work as a teacher in the school age classroom of
New Horizon Academy in Eagan. While in Winona, I had many fun experiences including
working at Miller Mentoring which is a one-on-one mentoring program unique to the area. I
mentored a maturing young girl for 3.5 years. Winona State University offered many
opportunities to work in the field. My experiences include work with kindergarten, first, second,
third, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth graders. I have taught health, math, science,
social studies, physical education, reading and language arts lessons. The ability to have all of
these experiences is truly a privilege and I gained insight into effective teaching practices. My
passion for teaching has further solidified during my time at Winona State.
To better teach my students, I maintain a positive attitude. I firmly believe one can
choose to see the good in a situation. Positivity can be very contagious; if my passion and
enthusiasm can encourage my students to be more excited about learning then I am truly doing
my job. In addition, I love doing crafts. I am nearly constantly doodling. I hope this will
transform my classroom into a bright, colorful, unique place that fosters an exciting learning
experience. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing sports like soccer and volleyball, and
learning to cook new things. I also frequent my cabin which is near International Falls,
The largest take-away from my education and field placements at Winona State is
ensuring I make the time to learn about my students and their prior knowledge. This
encompasses the student’s background as well as parent involvement and cooperation; learning
about their family’s values, hobbies, and thoughts can make my responsive classroom all the
more inclusive and effective. Being able to mold the curriculum to the needs and interests of the
individuals and talents, and they must be adjusted accordingly. Sensitivity to all types of
diversity is incredibly important. I want to be the type of teacher that takes on any challenge that
comes my way. My classroom will accept any ethnicity, social class, ability, and sexual
orientation.
I want to make a positive impact on my students’ lives; I hope they feel I made a
difference in their life when they reminisce on being in my class. Reading is an essential skill
that students need for most aspects of their education; I thoroughly enjoy reading and am excited
to inspire my students to feel the same. Additionally, I have a passion for math. I find math to be
incredibly fun and I love teaching it. I hope to lead my students on to a road of curiosity and
discovery and I will continue to strive for fun, creative ways to spark their interests in learning.
