Lesson 3 Class #: Badminton Grade 5 and 6 Course Physical Education

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES


 A6 – 2 consistently and confidently perform locomotor skills and combination of skills, by
using elements of body and space awareness, effort and relationships, alone and with
others, to improve personal performance
 A6 – 5 demonstrate ways to receive, retain and send an object with increasing accuracy
 A6 – 6 consistently and confidently perform manipulative skills by using elements of body
and space awareness, effort and relationship
 C6 – 5 describe and demonstrate practices that contribute to teamwork
 D6 – 1 demonstrate enjoyment of participation through extended effort in physical activity
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify the different lines in badminton for both singles and doubles games
2. Execute an overhead clear in a rally
3. Identify how to use the scoring system
4. Execute the scoring system in a game line situation
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 Racquets
 Birdies
 Badminton Nets

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS


 Gather the materials and equipment before the class and have them ready for when the
students arrive

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Gather students towards me and have them sit on the ground while I take
attendance
 Explain that we will play ‘Dice Game’ and ‘ to warm up and explain the
rules
 Explain the types of assessments that we will be doing for the Badminton 10 mins
Unit. Skills Checklist, I will be choose up to 6 or 7 students a day and
assess them based on their skill and knowledge of the sport.
Participation/Effort, the same way Tyler assessed them
 Key Questions: ‘What are the two ways to hold your racquet?’
Body Time
Serving 1) Go over each serve again
2) Have students spread out to each court and practice 7 mins
each serve a minimum for 5 times each
Go Over Scoring 1) Gather students around the court to explain the 4 mins
System scoring system used in badminton
2) Before each serve, the score needs to be said out-
loud and loud enough for all players to hear
3) If the number is odd the player must stand in the left

side of the court. If the number is even the player must
stand in the right side of the court.
4) Each time a different team is serving the new player is
serving
Kings/Queens 1) Have students get into partners that they will be
Court playing with
2) Explain that they will be playing doubles and only
scoring first to 2 points
3) If they loose the team will stay there and if they lose a 15 mins
new team will take their place.
4) I want them to be saying the score out loud
5) The remainder of the class will be waiting on the
sidelines until it is there turn to play
Conclusion Time
 Have the students put their racquet and birdies away and gather them to
the middle
3 mins
 Ask them a question regarding the scoring system
 Have them go change for their next class
Assessment
 Observation – During each drill/activity I will be watching how the students are
participating and complete each part of the drill. This way I am also able to give
feedback to the students. Positive to those who are doing the drill correctly and
constructive to those who may need a little more help.
 Skills Checklist – I will choose a number of students a day and let them know I will
be coming up to them and assessing their skill and knowledge of the sport.
