The importance of reading to children is obvious to every parent. Reading to children is

one of the best ways to put them on success-academically and personally. The American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends reading to children every day, starting after
they are first born, because reading stimulates the development of the brain, language and a
closer emotional relationship with a child.
You can start reading to children right from the moment they are born. Infants love to
hear the voices of their parents. It doesn’t matter what you read. The most important thing is a
togetherness of you and your baby. As your child gets older and can understand the stories you
read, take time to ask questions, e.g. what do you think will happen next? Do you know what
this word means? Which character is your favourite? You can retell the story or make up a new
one with the same characters.
Reading to children is so crucial that parents should find time to do it every day. You will
be surprised at how creative you are at finding time to read a story to your children. Read while
waiting to see the paediatrician, having a treat at a restaurant or waiting in line at the store. You
can read aloud in the morning before school and, of course, at bedtime. Read a story while
waiting for the bus or rain or once aboard. Make tapes of yourself or another family member
reading stories and play them in the car on the way to school or day-care.
Parents aren’t alone in understanding the importance of reading to children. Good
teachers read aloud in the classroom. Talk to your child’s teacher to get suggestions for books to
read and observe the class to get tips on reading aloud. Older siblings, relatives, and friends may
also enjoy reading aloud. When your child is ready, encourage her to read aloud to you and the
rest of the family. This will pave the way for a love of reading.

Dogs and cats should never be permitted to eat chocolate works like a poison in their bodies.
Chocolate contains a chemical called the bromine, which is similar to caffeine. Human bodies are able
to process the bromine without any ill side effects, but dogs and cats cannot.
Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of the bromine. It would take 20 ounces of milk
chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only two ounces of baker`s chocolate or six ounces of semisweet
chocolate. The amounts, of course, are much smaller for a cat, whose body weight is typically less
than that of a dog.
Most cats are not naturally attracted to eating chocolate, but many dogs are. Dogs by nature will
sample nearly anything that they see their masters eating, so pet owners must take care to keep all
chocolate products well out of reach of their dogs and cats.

2012 Film Review
2012 is Roland Emmerich’s film which uses the Mayan Calendar and other end-of-days
prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It imagines the world coming to an end in 2012.
2012 film brings off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. It stars when Cusack
drives a limo through the streets of Los Angeles as freeway and skyscrapers crumble all around him
from the shock of a 10.5 earthquake. The preposterous flying sequence is equally thrilling. The
climax occurs aboard the giant ark. When an equipment malfunction almost threatens the entire
mission.
Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the requisite clarity. In 2012 film,
Emmerich leaves us befuddled as to exactly what is happening to whom. However, Emmerich’ 2012
deserves credit for offbeat casting. Cusack supplies his trademark hangdog charm. McCarthy has
perhaps his best role ever as Peet’s cocky. Danny Glover lends dignity to the role of the tormented
president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist, brings a moving sense of anguish to a stock role.
Platt has fun playing the villain of the piece, and Woody Harrelson also chews the scenery as a bug-
eyed radio prophet trying to warn his listeners about Armageddon.

All in one, 2012’s cinematography, production design and visual effects are award-worthy. Music
also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up, Adam Lambert, who provides a
rousing anthem over the end credits.

31. The writer of the film 2012 was....

A. Adam Lambert
B. Danny Glover
C. Cusack
D. Roland Emmerich
E. Nick Everhart

32. Which part of the film should be improved?

Stephen King’s new ‘Joyland’ mixes chills with amusement park thrills
Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in
which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carrier and confronts the legacy of a vicious
murder, the fate of a dying child, and ways both will change his life forever.
“Joyland” has a patina of the supernatural : There is the ghost as well as Devin’s friendship with
a 10-year-old disabled boy named Mike, who is gifted with an “authentic psychic ability” that is “like
touching another world.” Still, for all that this helps drive the narrative, it ultimately brings us back to
Devin, to the novel’s human heart.
The newest novel from the prolific Stephen King, Joyland is not what I was expecting. We often
talk about reader expectation here at The book Smugglers, usually in the context of the hype preceding
a book, or the marketing campaign around said book. In the case of Joyland, from the vague synopsis
and pulpy cover, I confess that I was expecting something gloriously ostentatious, something
excessive.
A horror story about a haunted carnival ground, in which Evil itself has manifested in the murder
of unsuspecting pretty young things, perhaps, Imagine my delight then, when I discovered this most
certainly was not the case.
But ultimately? Joyland isn’t about ghost of murders or unmasking a killer. A heart, it’s a
book growing up and moving on. It’s a bittersweet tale of love and heartbreak, sadness and healing.
And aren’t those the best kind of stories? One of the best Stephen King novels I’ve read in years, I
thoroughly enjoyed Joyland-and it’s in the running for one of my notable books for 2013. It
absolutely recommended. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will
have to buy the actual book.”
