1
Introduction

Drive mechanism is the process of transforming

power from one point to the other
Basically, there are four types of drive mechanisms
a. Belt Drive
b. Chain Drive
c. Gear Drive
d. Friction Drive

2
Belt Drive
 Used for transforming power from one shaft to other
which are at distant apart
 Can be used with high speed drives
 Main disadvantage is slip and creep hence velocity ratio
is not fixed
 The cross-section of belt may be flat, v or other shape

3
Types of belt

According to material
o Leather

o Rubber
o Balata
o Textile or Fabric

According to structure
o Flat belt
o V – belt
o Toothed belt

Gear Drive
Used to transform rotary motion form one shaft to
another
Used for transmission of power and motion
Used for Positive drive i.e. to maintain constant velocity
ratio between shafts
Especially used when centre distance are relatively short
Comparatively, gear drives are more compact and can
operate at very high speed

5
Types of Gear
According to the position of axes of shaft
A. Gear with parallel axes

Spur Gear Pinion Gear

Types of Gear
B. Gear with intersecting axes

7
Types of Gear
C. Gear with neither parallel nor intersecting axes

Chain Drive
Belt built up of rigid links
Links are hinged together
small wheel could be moved
across the surface of the large
disc giving an infinitely
variable gear ratio.

used on scooters, mainly go-
peds, in place of a chain,
shaping machine, etc.

9
Friction Drive
Friction Drive uses 2
wheels on the engine to spin
the main wheel.
The small wheel could be
moved across the surface of
the large disc giving an
infinitely variable gear ratio.
This kind of engine is often
used on scooters, mainly go-
peds, in place of a chain,
shaping machine, etc.
