APPLICATION OF TRIGONOMETRY

Trigonometry is the science of

measurements of sides and angles, and
their relationships, associated with an
arbitrarily given triangle. The name itself
originated from the Greek word trigon,
meaning a triangle. The subject was
primarily developed to solve the problems of
triangle and astronomy

Because of the periodic nature of the
trigonometric functions it has got its
application in almost all the branches of
science, Engineering, Economics and
Business applications.

The following are the few applications of
Trigonometry
1. Music is composed of waves of different
frequencies and amplitudes and these can
be described using sine and cosine
functions
2. Signals transmission of T.V. and Radio
involves waves described with sine and
cosine functions

3. Medical equipment that measures heart
beat, breathing etc uses trigonometric
functions
4. The heat equation involves sine and
cosine functions to know how the things
get hotter
5. To represent the fluid flow

6. To know the intensity of the earth
quake trigonometric functions are
used
7. Optics and statics uses
trigonometric functions
8. Motion of tides
9. Mechanical vibrations
10. To represent Alternating current

long rope, which is tightly stretched
and tied from the top of a vertical pole
to the ground. Find the height of the
pole, if the angle made by the rope
with the ground level is 30°.

3. A tree breaks due to storm and the
broken part bends so that the top of the tree
touches the ground making an angle 30°
with it. The distance between the foot of the
tree to the point where the top touches the
ground is 8 m. Find the height of the tree.

tower from a point on the ground,
which is 30 m away from the foot of the
tower, is 30°. Find the height of the
tower.

5. A kite is flying at a height of 60 m
above the ground. The string attached to
the kite is temporarily tied to a point on
the ground. The inclination of the string
with the ground is 60°. Find the length
of the string, assuming that there is no
slack in the string.

6. 1.5 m tall boy is standing at some
distance from a 30 m tall building. The
angle of elevation from his eyes to the
top of the building is 30°, after
walking certain distance towards the
tower now the angle of elevation of the
tower is 60°. Find the distance he
walked towards the tower

7. From a point on the ground, the angles
of elevation of the bottom and the top of a
transmission tower fixed at the top of a 20
m high building are 45° and 60°
respectively. Find the height of the tower.

high lighthouse from the sea-level, the
angles of depression of two ships are
30° and 45°. If one ship is exactly behind
the other on the same side of the
lighthouse, find the distance between the
two ships.

opposite each other on either side of the
road, which is 80 m wide. From a point
between them on the road, the angles of
elevation of the top of the poles are 60° and
30°, respectively. Find the height of the
poles and the distances of the point from the
poles. Vikasana Bridge course-2012
