Fault Code/ECAM Warning: BRAKES AUTO BRK FAULT First Issue Date: 25-NOV-2010
// BRAKE RELEASED
BRAKES RELEASED
Model: Last Publication Date: 25-APR-2016
Manufacturer:
Status: Closed

Issue Description
Some operators observed instances of BRAKES RELEASED or AUTO BRK FAULT ECAM
warnings at touch-down with an associated CFDS fault message "TACHOMETER1 (19GG)
BSCU (10GG)" or "TACHOMETER4 (22GG) BSCU (10GG)". This was noticed on aircraft
equipped with the EMM BSCU L4.9B (PN E21327006 or E21327106).
Consequence
The concerned brake unit is released from touch down during all the landing phase. The
three others brake units remain operative and ensure aircraft braking.
The monitoring that triggers in the BSCU Trouble Shooting Data is Fault Code 0850
or/and 0853.
In most of the cases :
- the subsequent application of TSM task does not reveal any hard fault during the
functional test of the tachometers as per AMM.
- no wiring faults are found
- all the parts replaced as a precaution are NFF at the repair shop.
After BSCU reset, no fault is found and the subsequent flights are normal.
Investigation Status
An extension of the monitoring phase of the tachometer signal was introduced in the
BSCU L4-9B software on demand of the Airworthiness Authorities.
The monitoring phase was extended from take-off phase to other ground phases in order
to detect a loss of the tachometer signal during landing.
Further analysis of the cases reported to Airbus, it was concluded that fault codes 0850
and 0853 can be spuriously triggered by the current logic of BSCU L4-9B software only in
very specific cases where the wheel is slow to spin up at touch down (curvature of the
runway, roll at touch-down, contaminated runway).
A DMU programming was installed on one aircraft in order to catch one event and
understand why the monitoring spuriously triggers on outboard wheels only.
Mitigation / Interim Plan
The TSM tasks 324200-810-815 and 324200-810-817 have been modified in November
2010 TSM revision to make it easier to disregard a spurious tachometer fault message.
Maintenance Information
We recommend to strictly adhere to the TSM task since the monitoring can also detect a
genuine fault.
Airbus does not recommend the re-installation of BSCU L4.8 (or other previous
standards) as a corrective action. Indeed, BSCU L4.9B is mandated by EASA AD 011-
0201.
Repercussion on A/C Dispatch
Tachometers are NO GO items as per MMEL.
Solution
Airbus has decided to launch BSCU corrective software.
This new BSCU software L4.10 was certified on 30th Sep 2015. A
Controlled Entry Into Service has been performed with few operators in
order to ensure a worldwide introduction of this product with the
highest level of maturity.

Both Airbus and Messier-Bugatti-Dowty have now released documentations to

allow all A320FAM operators to initiate the retrofit:
- Airbus SB 32-1432 (new revision published in April 2016)
- Messier-Bugatti-Dowty E21327-32-3409 (new revision published in April
2016)
