MAINTENANCE PERCEPTION OF ESCALATOR-RELATED

ACCIDENTS IN COMMERCIAL BUILDING

ABSTRACT
The spate of escalator accidents abroad has raised public safety issues in which both building management and visitors
must address as because this issue is threatening the safety of the public. Escalator injuries and accidents has become
a worldwide issues and need attention from everyone. The United States Consumer Safety Product Commission
(CSPC) reports escalator kills more than 30 people and severe injure more than 17000 people per year in United States.
This research aim to identify the critical factor of managing and maintaining escalator-related accidents in commercial
building around Kuala Lumpur area. The objective of this research is to determine the contributing factors to escalator-
related accidents in commercial buildings and to evaluate factors significance to escalator-related injury in commercial
buildings. Two hypothesis tests is designed for each objectives. Data collection is planned through secondary and
primary data collection. The secondary data and resources collected included journal article, and other reliable sources
of materials. While for the primary data, it was planned for collection through semi structured interview and structured
questionnaires survey to respondents in charged for escalator maintenance for commercial buildings within Kuala
Lumpur. Identified, Expert panellist of senior escalator service contractors will be asked to respond the suitability of
the framework identified validity of variables understudy.

The result arise from the analysis of data collected through interview and questionnaires are expected to guide the best
practise in terms of escalator usage based on the selected or identified factors in the framework. Therefore, it is
important to identify the critical factor(s) of managing and maintaining escalator-related accidents and the accident
rate can be reduced and achieve accident free.
