Abstract
Mass is defined as the amount of matter in an object. The law of conservation of the
mass by Lavoisier state that there is no change of mass in the chemical reaction. The purpose
of this study is to prove the truth of the law of conservation of mass. In this article,
experiments were conducted to prove that the mass of the reactants equal to the mass of
products. This research method is the reaction of two substances and measuring the mass
before and after reacted reacted

Key words : conservative, mass, reactant, product, equal

Introduction
Mass is defined as the amount of matter in an object. Matter, in turn, is a catchall term
used to describe anything with a physical presence anything you can touch, taste, or smell.
(Stated more scientifically, matter is anything that has mass.) Mass is measured in SI units by
the kilogram (Mc.Murry Fay,Chemistry(4th),p.12)
McMurry Fay write in his book law of conservation of mass by Lavoisier state that
mass is neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions. (Mc.Murry Fay,Chemistry
(4th),p.39). It is same as the statement of Olmsted and Williams. (Olmsted and
William,Chemistry, The Molecular Science,p.69). Another writen, Ebbing and Gammon has
diferent statement about law of conservation of the mass wich is state that the total mass
remains constant during a chemical change (chemical reaction). (Ebbing and
Gammon,General Chemistry (9th),p.7). From some of definition above can make a
conclution that law of conservation of the mass by Lavoisier state that there is no change of
mass in the chemical reaction.
Materials and Methods
This experiment used some chemicals, such as solution of 0.1M sodium carbonate
(Na2CO3) and solution of 0.1 M calcium carbonate (CaCl2). The method used in conducting
this experiment was measuring the mass. First step was put test tube in the Erlenmeyer. Next
step was 10 mL solution of 0.1 M CaCl2 was poured into Erlenmeyer and 10 mL solution of
0.1 M Na2CO3 was poured into test tube. The mass was measured and noted. After that
Erlenmeyer and test tube were tilted until mixing and measured the mass and noted.

Results
The first step was measured the mass of reactant. The reactants were solution sodium
carbonate (Na2CO3) and calcium carbonate (CaCl2). When reactant was measured, the mass
of reactant is 438.74 gram.

The next step was measured the mass of product. After reactant react, it was measured
and it got the mass of product is 483.73 gram.

Discussion
The experiment result above between Na2CO3 and CaCl2, according Lavoisier theory,
mass before reaction and after reaction must be same. It can determine using some steps.

First, using formula bellow to calculate the mole :

mole = M x V
 Mole of Na2CO3 : mole = M x V = 0.1 M x 10 ml = 10 mmole
 Mole of CaCl2 : mole = M x V = 0.1 M x 10 ml = 10 mmole

Using this formula to calculate the mole after reaction :

Na2CO3(aq) + CaCl2(aq) → 2NaCl(aq) + CaCO3(s)
first 1 mmole 1 mmole - -
react 1 mmole 1 mmole 2 mmole 1 mmole
rest - - 2 mmole 1 mmole

Using this formula to calculate the mass before reaction and after reaction :

mass
mole = mass Mr
Mr
a. The mass before reaction
 The mass of Na2CO3
mass
mole = mass Mr → mass = mole x Mr
Mr
= 1 mmole x 160 gr mole
= 160 mg = 0.16 gr
 The mass of CaCl2
mass
mole = mass Mr → mass = mole x Mr
Mr
= 1 mmole x 111 gr mole
= 111 mg = 0.111 gr
 The total mass of the reactants
The mass of Na2CO3 + The mass of CaCl2 = 0.160 gr + 0.111 gr
= 0.271 gr
b. The mass after reaction
 The mass of CaCO3
mass mass
mole = mass Mr → mass = mole x Mr
Mr Mr
gr gr
= 1 mmole x 100
mole
mole
= 100 mg = 0.1000 gr
 The mass of NaCl
mass
mole = mass Mr → mass = mole x Mr
Mr
gr gr
= 2 mmole x 58.5
mole
mole
= 117 mg = 0.117 gr
 The total mass of the products
The mass of CaCO3 + The mass of NaCl = 0.100 gr + 0.117 gr
= 0.217 gr

But, the experiment result above shows there are difference between mass before
reaction and mass after reacting. After it is reacted, there are change of colour and deposit.
Change of colour from transparance to white and there are some white deposit. The reaction
is replacemen reaction. From the experiment we fint difference 0.01 gram. of mass before and
after reacting. The reason why get difference of mass, because there few solution of Na2CO3
(in the small test tube) left in the test tube so it does not have the reaction with CaCl 2. It make
reaction not perfect and difference of mass be small different. Another reason is equipment
falls, because the number on the electrical balance change some times, and it make a little fall
of accurate. In the case above, the difference of mass can be ignore because the different just
0.01 gram.

Conclusion
Based on the discussion above, it can be concluded that mass before reacting and after
reacting is same compatible to the law of conservation of mass by Lavoisier.
