The suggestions to upgrade the Malaysian education system

(assignment of Philosophy of Education)

Malaysian position in the performance standards of international education, PISA and


TIMSS does affect the education curriculum whenever it drops few stages from the first attempt
of joining it. Due to this result, the Ministry of Education had to change the previous education
curriculum that shows no effect to the position of Malaysia in the PISA and TIMSS.

The implications of the assessment of the education system in Malaysia based on


international performance standards is the weaknesses display of the schooling outcomes
(Malaysia, 2013). The examination held to compare the student’s academic achievements but
other than academic performance also is being compared. That is the reason why Malaysia
schooling out comes does portrays awful schooling outcome. Other than that, the standard of
international education also gives a clearer insight into the real strengths and weaknesses of
important areas of education, including the use of essential skills such as analytical reasoning,
application, and capacity for continued learning (Malaysia, 2013). This is what our education
systems are lacking from. It does not being stress into the education system in which cause the
students just to know the basic of that topic learnt and memorise the topic to able to answer
examination. Most of the students do not have a deeper understanding about the topic learn
and also cannot apply the concept of the topic into daily life. All of this happens due to the
previous curriculum which emphasize on the academic only without having the gist of the
subject. Realizing the emptiness of the skills among the students, the ministry of education has
change the previous curriculum into the latest curriculum which from the Malaysian Education
Blueprint 2013-2025.

The first suggestion to upgrade the Malaysian education system to be better positioned
is by implementing and enduring the Higher Order Thinking Skills, (HOTs) in learning Science
and Mathematics. HOTs is the thinking skills that does not use regular solving method to find
solution or answer in facing new situation. It requires the person to think creatively in finding the
solution despite thinking for other method too. It is not a direct answer question. HOTs can help
the student in terms of their comprehension. This is because previous curriculum, the method
used in in learning is memorizing the facts and utters it out during the examination. By applying
HOTs, the student has to understand deeply about the topic learnt before he can answer the
question and also help them to use the knowledge that they have in their daily life. Moreover,
HOTs may also help the student to increase their awareness of knowledge level such as,
analysis, creating, and evaluating. The student has to be ready to answer the question of HOTs
which require them to think over the topic learn. Thus, the student can have various study skill in
their life and not only limited to reading for memorizing. Next, the student might also learn about
solving and discovery which may help them to build the sense of curious in whatever they want
to know. The student will get various type of task that requires them to apply creative thinking in
accomplishing it. This is one of the good skills as they will discover the solution of the problems
on their own and have the chance to explore new things. Then, HOTs can also help the
students in terms of doing the scientific investigation. This is because the scientific investigation,
need the student to carry out, and works to obtain certain evidence to proof the investigation.
Only then, the investigation can be proofed to be true and the experience gain may enhance
their understanding toward the topic learnt. According to Malaysia (2013), the examination
questions will revamped with greater proportion focused on higher order thinking skill.
Therefore, by applying the HOTs in the curriculum toward the students, Malaysian position in
the performance standards of international education can be improve and will be in the same
level of the other country.

On the other hand, the next suggestion that can be made to promote Malaysian position
is by having the innovative thinking among the student. This is because the, based on the
Malaysia (2013) one of the competencies that is being measured is specific thinking and
reasoning. Hence, by utilizing the innovative thinking it can boost the thinking skill among the
student to produce the creative and innovative learner who are able to compete and apply the
Higher-Order Thinking skills. The innovative thinking stimulates the thinking map that use visual
look which is suitable for from standard four students. There are eight types of thinking map
such as circle map, bubble map, double bubble map, tree map, brace map, flow map, multi-flow
map and lastly bridge map. All of these maps have their own ways on encouraging the student
to think based on the type of map. Hence, students can use these map to help them nurture
their think and think creatively. In addition, i-THINK is one of the programmes that are based on
the thinking map, by the Ministry of Education with Innovative Malaysia Agency which is being
done at six primary schools and four secondary schools. Hence, to encourage thinking skill
among the student teacher can use thinking map as one of the method to enhance their
cognitive, and preparing the student to compete at the international level.
As a conclusion, Malaysian position in the performance standards of international
education, PISA and TIMSS are quite worrying because it shows the reduction number of
student ability to do reasoning and to think out of the box. Thus, it affects the overall curriculum
in order to improve Malaysian position. In the new curriculum of Malaysia Education Blueprint
2013-2025, Malaysian position is being emphasized and discusses successfully to ensure it
progress. Consequently, the Higher-Order Thinking skill and the innovative thinking can be used
to promote creative thinking and reasoning among the students. They can actively participate in
thinking out of the box and produce new answer with a higher level.
