Module Title
Drilling Engineering I
Module Leader Semester Fall
Dr.Eng. Taher El-fakharany 2016
Key words:
Well design , Drill string, Bottom hole assemblies(BHAs), well planning, rig ,drill
pipe, drill collar, casing, drilling fluids, mud, derrick, hoisting system, Bits.

Assignment (3)

1- It is expected to encounter formation water having a pressure of 2500 psi

while drilling at 4000 ft. what would be the mud weight required to stop this
water from flowing into the bore hole ?
2- Given the following data:

Depth, ft Porosity Sp.gr of fluid Sp.gr of

sediment
0- 2000 0.25 1.05 2.55
2000-4000 0.15 1.08 2.59

4000-6000 0.20 0.90 2.62

6000-8000 0.32 0.95 2.67

Plot the overburden pressure Vs depth and find the overburden pressure
gradient at 3000, 5000 and 7000 ft.

3- Determine the load on the crown block if the dead end of the drilling line is
fixed :
a- to the leg of the derrick
b- to the travelling block
c- to the crown block.
Given that: the travelling block has 4 sheaves, load on hook Wh = 100 tons.
Friction can be neglected.

4- Determine the load on the four legs of the derrick when the dead end of the
line is fixed:
a- Based the draw works ( 1 m far away from the leg)
b- at the opposite side of the draw works.
c- to the leg of the derrick opposite to the draw works.
Given data are the same as in problem No. 3 & square base of the derrick is 8*8
m.
