We use – much, many and a lot of to talk about large quantities, but every quantifier is used in a
different way.

1. We use a lot of in positive and negative sentences with countable and uncountable nouns.

We bought a lot of food.


Paula hasn’t got a lot of free time
We bought a lot of books.
Did they ask a lot of questions?

There is a lot of food/money/water… (singular verb)

There are a lot of trees/shops/people… (plural verbs)

A: Did you take any photo?
B: I took some, but not many.

3. We use much in negative sentences and questions with uncountable nouns.

Did you buy much food?


I haven’t got much luggage.

How much money do you want?


A: Have you got any money?
B: I have got some, but not much.
