Course Description: Vector operations. Equilibrium of a particle. Free body diagram. Moment
of forces about a point and about an axis. Equivalent systems.
Equilibrium of a rigid body in two and three dimensions. Trusses (method
of Joints and sections). Frames and machines. Dry friction.
Prerequisite: IE 200: Engineering Communication Skills and PHYS 281: Physics lab

Course Learning By the completion of the course, the students should be able to:
Outcomes: 1. Find the resultant of a system of concurrent forces by
parallelogram laws and Cartesian vector notation in 2D & 3D. (
magnitude and direction)
2. Solve equations of equilibrium for a particle and for a rigid
determinate structure in 2D & 3D.
3. Determine the moment of a force about a point and a line and
the moment of a couple in 2D and 3D. ( magnitude and vector)
4. Reduce a system of forces and couples to a single force and
determine its point of application.
5. Calculate the forces in truss members using method of joints and
method of sections.
6. Analyze the forces acting on the members of pin-connected
frames and machines.
7. Analyze the equilibrium of rigid bodies subjected to dry friction.

The following instructions must be followed in order not to deduct marks from HW grade:

 HW is submitted in the last lecture of the week, starting from 3rd week of the semester.
Absolutely, no late HW is accepted.
 Problem numbers are in the 14th edition.
 Underlined problem numbers will be solved and graded according to Student Outcome
Rubric

 HW must be written on A4 paper size. Every HW problem must be solved on single sheet at
least.

 Sketching of the free body diagrams and writing must be neat and clean. Box in the final
answer.

 Student must use the following cover page with every HW.
