4. The cause of every action
performed is desire. Things
happen not according to man’s
desire but according to the
Lord’s Desire. Even the worlds
and the things in them are the
Desire of God.
Desires are of two types: the
lower and the higher. The lower
is the desire of man and binds
him to hanker after all sorts of
things; but the higher is that of
God and, unlike the former, it
liberates man.
So long as the lower desires
spring from the heart, liberation
is not attained. When the heart’s
desire has withdrawn and that
of the Self is established, then
man is controlled by the Self and
is freed from the clutches of
ignorance.
When desire arises, it annoys,
it troubles, it angers and leads
one to do various things. We
should do our utmost to curb it
each time it arises; he who
controls his desire is a master
of himself.
The seeker has to struggle
to master his senses and his
ego and, until they are
mastered or put under
control by the Self, his
power will remain dormant
One must discard all desires and
control the senses by which the
body is governed in order to
become pure and to attain the
saintly abode; however, one
must completely eliminate them
to attain the eternal abode.
One who can control all the
senses with the help of the Self
is a master of himself. Hence,
the Self controls the man who
surrenders himself to His Will
through silence, meditation
and devotion.
Just as the lake has many
channels through which it loses
water and cannot be filled,
likewise our body loses energy
through our senses; if our senses
are controlled, we can gather our
inner potentials and acquire any
power we look for.
When we allow our thoughts to
dwell continuously upon material
things, we lose energy through the
channels of thought; when we speak
continuously about material things,
we lose energy through speaking;
when we desire something, we lose
energy through desire.
Similarly, we lose energy through
passion, hate, jealousy, gambling...
So one who controls all the senses
of the body and reaches a state of
silence within himself is sure to
attain spiritual development and
can plunge into the depth of inner
learning.
The lower thoughts, which
take all forms of desire, come
from the satanic force called
ignorance, which is the root of
all our sorrow, grief, misery,
trouble, sin and also death.
The moment the soul enters a
woman’s womb to take a body,
Satan who is infinite darkness
veils the ego or the human self
and causes him to be ignorant.
This ignorance prevails in him
as long as he does not seek to
know the truth.
Satan has various appellations such
as world, matter, body, form,
darkness, ignorance, lower
thought, visible, finite, something,
known, ego, evil actions, duality,
separation, impurity, all the
different evil qualities of the
intellectual, actional, sensual
senses, and death.
Satan in the worldly men keeps
them in ignorance; Satan in the
spiritual men forces them towards
quick progress. Since ignorance
cannot be dispelled in one day,
Satan tires the seeker constantly
until he brings him to the goal
Thus Satan, too, is helping
the seeker. Hence, Satan and
God become two
companions in the seeker
whereas in the worldly man
Satan ever remains an
enemy.
Satan and the Lord are ego and
Soul. As the ego has to question
and the Soul to answer, hence,
Satan is the questioner and the
Lord is the replier; both have
their roles in all fields of
activities where birth and death
co-exist.
