INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY PRIZE
Rita Colwell, distinguished professor in the University of Maryland’s cell biology and molecular genetics department, has been awarded the International Prize for Biology 2017 for her outstanding contributions to marine microbiolo-
gy, bioinformatics, microbiomes and the understanding and prevention of cholera.
Colwell is the thirty-third recipient of the
International Prize for Biology, generally
recognized as one of the most prestigious
honors a natural scientist can receive. Past
laureates include such other renowned biol-
ogists as John B. Gurdon, Motoo Kimura,
Edward O. Wilson, Ernst Mayr, and Thomas
Cavalier-Smith.
There is no Nobel Prize for biology, but Ja-
pan’s International Prize for Biology is one
of three prizes often considered to be biolo-
gy’s equivalent. The other two honors often
placed in this category are the Balzan Prize
and Crafoord Prize.

$13M for Tech Using Algae
to Make Biologics
The company announced early last week
that it has raised $13 million in funding to
support that work, and also announced its
first product, a “natural” blue colorant that it
plans to launch in early 2018.
The new funds include $11.2 million in ven-
ture funding raised from Avista Development
Corporation, BioEconomy Capital, and Seat-
tle-area biotech investors, along with a $1.8
million grant Lumen received from the De-
partment of Energy earlier this year.
Lumen was co-founded by former Adaptive
Biotechnologies executive Brian Finrow and
Jim Roberts, who previously directed Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Center’s Basic Sciences
Division. The pair believes they have found
the first method to engineer spirulina to be
used to create drugs. It is the first time the
company has raised funds since it was found-
ed in April of this year.
The blue colorant is manufactured using
Spirulina, a bright green algae that was re-
cently approved by the FDA to use in sup-
plements and the manufacturing of food and
cosmetics. That makes the colorant “natural”
life-saving contributions to the understanding
and prevention of cholera, an acute diarrheal
disease, which, until Colwell began her work
on this project in 1960, was widely believed
that cholera was only transmitted from per-
son to person. However, Colwell and her
team’s research over the years have shown
that it is caused by environmental factors and
is associated with natural bacteria on the zo-
oplankton.
“It is an extraordinary honor to be named
recipient of the International Prize for Biolo-
gy, a very special honor for a biologist,” said
Colwell. “I am deeply grateful to the Japan
by industry standards, as opposed to a pig-
ment made from inorganic materials in a lab.
“For years, demand has grown for natural
alternatives to food and cosmetics with arti-
ficial colors made from petroleum and coal
tar, which many believe to be unhealthy,”
Finrow said. “But high cost and variable
quality have held back natural colors from
being widely adopted. The color blue has
been a particularly tough challenge, because
few plants make it in harvestable quantities.
Lumen’s platform can lower cost, increase
production and quality control, and unleash
Spirulina extract’s enormous market poten-
tial with consumers.”
Lumen’s improved strains produce more
pigment at higher purity but at a fraction of
the cost of traditional methods, and without
introducing foreign gene pathways from oth-
er species. More stable versions and a palette
of additional colors are also in the pipeline,
the company said.

and recognitions, including the 2017 Vanne-
var Bush Award given by the U.S. National

der of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star
bestowed by the Emperor of Japan. She is the

Heart-In-A-Jar to Test
New Drugs
You probably don’t think about it as often,
yet it continues to pump with its faithful,
steady beat- carrying blood to all your or-
gans. Heart is truly a wonderful organ; but
how about one beating rhythmically, sus-
pended in a jar? Bizarre? No, Amazing rather.
Canadian-backed biotech Novoheart has
created stem cells, which in turn can build a
blood-ejecting mini “cloned” human heart.
The potential is huge. And it’s a world first.
The first thing people say when they see
the tiny hearts in action company co-found-
er Kevin Costa says is, “Wow, it’s actually
beating.… It’s actually working like a heart.”
He says the Novoheart technology is different
from other stem cell-derived testing methods
because of the three-dimensional structure
of his company’s “Heart-in-a-jar.” “We can
actually measure the hollow chamber that is
pumping, so we can monitor how much pres-
sure the organ is generating, like the blood
pressure.”
The Novoheart is an actual beating heart-
like structure made of stem cells that could
revolutionize the path to market for new
drugs.
Creating the heart valves is a multi-step pro-
cess where scientists reprogram blood cells
into stem cells that are then manipulated into
heart cells. Millions of these heart cells form
a Jello-O like solution that grows into a mold
taking the shape of the “heart.” Once fully
formed, the mini heart beats allowing scien-
tists to measure the pace, similar to a heart
rate.
The researchers involved in the company
say the drugs could be tested on bio-artifi-
cial human hearts to see their impact, levels
of toxicity, and side-effects. Many people
who take hard-hitting cancer drugs end up
with cardiovascular issues, or even die from
heart failure because the drugs are so toxic.
Doctors cannot tell who is more susceptible
to drug-induced heart problems. This would
provide a safe environment for patients and

Researchers Uncover
Advanced Cancer
Resistance Pathway
Researchers have discovered a mechanism
of resistance to checkpoint inhibitors and
how to reverse it. The biomarker results from
the IMvigor210 study were reported at the
ESMO Immuno Oncology Congress 2017.
The discovery is based on findings from the
300-patient IMvigor210 biomarker study, the
results from which led to FDA approval of
the anti-PD-L1 antibody atezolizumab for the
treatment of advanced bladder cancer.
“Understanding why the remaining 70% to
80% are resistant would enable us to target
the mechanism with an additional drug and
extend the benefits of checkpoint inhibitors
to more patients,” suggests Sanjeev Maria-
thasan, Ph.D., senior scientist, oncology bio-
marker department, at Genentech.
The IMvigor210 biomarker study investi-
gated the drivers of efficacy and primary re-
sistance to the anti-PD-L1 checkpoint inhibi-
tor atezolizumab in 300 patients with bladder
cancer. They used a combination of methods
including immunohistochemistry, genome
sequencing, and RNA expression.
The researchers found two drivers of effi-
cacy and one driver of resistance. In terms of
efficacy, tumours with the highest number of
mutations – called a high mutation burden –
were the most amenable to immunotherapy.
Tumours that had T cells present in the
tumour microenvironment were also more
responsive to immunotherapy. Regarding re-
sistance, tumours with high expression of the
cytokine TGF-β tended to be unresponsive to
immunotherapy.
Mariathasan said that in “T cell excluded tu-
mours”, the tumour may secrete a factor that
builds a collagen-rich fortified wall around
the tumours. The stromal microenvironment
is like a Velcro that T cells stick to and do
not enter the tumour. High expression of
TGF-β and TGF-β-induced stromal genes in
these excluded tumours were associated with
non-responders, suggesting that these may
help to fortify the tumour against T cell pen-
etration.
The researchers then examined whether
inhibiting TGF-β activity could improve the
efficacy of atezolizumab with the help of a
mouse model with the “T cell excluded tu-
mour” phenotype which was used to compare
four treatments: isotype antibody (control
group), anti-PD-L1 alone, anti-TGF-β alone,
and the combination of anti-TGF-β plus an-
ti-PD-L1.
In the combination group, TGF-β activity in
stromal cells was reduced, T cells penetrated
into the centre of the tumour, and the tumour
reduced in size.
Mariathasan said: “This suggests that giv-
ing anti-TGF-β and anti-PD-L1 together can
remodel the stromal microenvironment and
allow T cells into the tumour. The ‘T cell ex-

ing, where huge advances in gene-editing
technology are making it possible for scien-
tists to tweak the DNA of different organisms
with incredible, unprecedented precision.
Until just a few years ago, altering individ-
ual genes in everything from plant cells to
mouse cells to human cells was a crude, labo-
rious, and often futile process.
And now here we are, as scientists use techs
like CRISPR, which harnesses the immune
system of bacteria to snip individual genes,
either knocking them out or even inserting
new ones in their place. But all good things
are well… not all good- and in case of this
gene editing tool, sure enough it snips DNA
at precise locations, but it is also is capable of
“turning up the volume” on some genes.
This potentially overcomes the problem of
the wrong genes being modified by mistake,
so-called off-target effects, which is viewed
as a major safety barrier to using Crispr in a
clinical context.
“Cutting DNA opens the door to introduc-
ing new mutations,” said Juan Carlos Izpis-
ua Belmonte, who led the latest work at the
Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. “That
is something that is going to stay with us with
Crispr or any other tool we develop that cuts
DNA. It is a major bottleneck in the field of
genetics – the possibility that the cell, after
the DNA is cut, may introduce harmful mis-
takes.”
With that in mind, a team of researchers set
out to develop a take on CRISPR-Cas9 tech-
nology that wouldn’t require the DNA to be

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
is awarded to a candidate who, as per these
regulations, has submitted a thesis on the ba-
sis of original and independent research in
any particular discipline or involving more
than one discipline (inter-disciplinary), that
makes a contribution to the advancement of
knowledge, which is approved by Board of
examiners as required.
Eligibility:
For purposes of admission to the Ph.D. pro-
gramme, a candidate should have obtained a
Master’s Degree with 55% marks in the qual-
ifying examination.For SC/ST candidates
and for candidates who have completed the
PG degree before 1991, the minimum can
be only 50% for admission to the Ph.Dpro-
gramme.
Registration for the PhD Programme:
There shall be the following categories
of candidates registered for the Ph.D. pro-
gramme:
a. Full-time scholar (with or without stipend
or fellowship)
b. Part-time scholar (teacher or non-teacher,
internal vis-à-vis external)
The candidates belonging to any of the
above categories may register at University
Departments, Affiliated Colleges, Research
Institutions, or R & D Centres/Laboratories
coming under these regulations.
FULL-TIME
The following candidates are eligible to
register for the full-time Ph.D. programme. A
candidate who has qualified for:
a. Master’s Degree in the faculties of Arts,
Sciences, Fine Arts, Languages, Commerce,
Education, Management Science of this
University or equivalent thereto
PART-TIME (INTERNAL)
A candidate, possessing any one of the
qualifications prescribed under Regulation 2
supra and falling under any of the following
categories, is eligible to conduct research on
a Part-time basis (i.e., can conduct research
while continuing as teacher, Executive etc.):
a. A teacher working in the Department of
the University or in an affiliated College of
the University, Higher Secondary School or
High School or Polytechnic within the terri-
torial jurisdiction of the University provided
b. Teachers of affiliated colleges holding
NET/SLET qualification or M.Phil. degree
with one year of teaching experience after M.
Phil degree and Teachers of Higher Second-
ary Schools/High Schools and Polytechnic
with two years of experience after the qual-
ifying degree be allowed to register for Ph.D
(part-time) programme.
c. Teachers of affiliated colleges in the fol-
lowing disciplines, with one year of teaching
experience without M.Phil or SLET/NET
are permitted to do part-time Ph.D i) Com-
puter Science, ii) Media Arts, iii) English, iv)
Management, v) Natya, vi) Communication
and Journalism, vii) Hotel and Catering Man-
agement, viii) Interior Design, ix) BioTech-
nology and x) Bio-Informatics.
d. A candidate employed other than as a
teacher in a permanent job in a registered
firm/institution, within the territorial juris-
diction of the University with a minimum of
FOUR YEARS of total working experience,
after the qualifying degree and satisfying the
rules framed separately by the Syndicate
from time to time.
e. Research Assistants/Technical Assistants
appointed on a permanent basis by the Uni-
versity are eligible to register for Ph.D. pro-
gramme on Part-time basis after confirmation
of service.
f. Candidate with M.L. Degree practicing as
an advocate in any Court of Law or serving as
a Legal Advisor to/in a registered firm/insti-
tution within the territorial jurisdiction of the
University with a minimum of FOUR
YEARS of total working experience after
qualifying degree.
PART-TIME (EXTERNAL)
Not withstanding anything contained in
these regulations, candidates possessing an-
yone of the qualifications from the Univer-
sity of Madras or from any other University
recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent
thereto, prescribed under Regulation 3.2 su-
pra, and employed as a teacher, scientist or in
any other related capacity (as recommended
by the Selection Committee of the concerned
department) in National/State level institu-
tions, Universities, Research and Develop-
ment (R&D) Centres/Laboratories and insti-
tutions outside the territorial jurisdiction of
this University, in India and abroad, who are
permitted by the respective organizations for
pursuing research leading to the Ph.D. De-
gree of this University on a Part-time basis,
while continuing in employment, may be per-
mitted to register for the Ph.D. programme
on a Part-time basis as external candidates
two years after acquiring qualifying degree.
These candidates are expected to do research
in their place of employment and in addition,
they should undergo such course work, ex-
amination and research work as may be pre-
scribed by the supervisor/doctoral committee
for a minimum of SIX MONTHS during the
research period directly under the supervisor
in this University. In addition to the Super-
visor from this University, they shall have a
joint supervisor from the institution where
they are employed, provided such a super-
visor is recognized as supervisor for Ph.D.
programme by this University or the host
University. In the case of non-availability of
a recognized supervisor in the institution, the
candidate’s research work shall be monitored
by the Head of the institution.
DURATION OF RESEARCH
FULL-TIME
A candidate registered as a full-time scholar
for the Ph.D. programme possessing any one
of the above qualifications as mentioned in
Section 3 supra shall work continuously in
the department under a supervisor for a min-
imum period of THREE YEARSafter provi-
sional registration and before submission of
the thesis.
PART-TIME
A candidate registered for the Ph.D. pro-
gramme as a part-time scholar (both internal
and external) shall work for a minimum peri-
od of FOUR YEARSafter provisional regis-
tration, before submission of the Thesis.
EXEMPTION
Exemption of ONE YEARfrom the min-
imum duration required is permissible in
respect of candidates who possess an M.
Phil./M.Phil.on INTER-DISCIPLINARY-
basis or M.Litt. (in the relevant subject) or
Master’s Degree in the faculty of Law, M.E
and M.Tech.
CONVERSION OF FULL-TIME REG-
ISTRATION INTO PART-TIME AND
VICE-VERSA
Notwithstanding anything prescribed in
these regulations, the University may permit
conversion from Full-time research to Part-
time research and vice-versa in respect of
candidates registered, for valid reasons and
subject to satisfying the regulations, rules and
conditions in force. The period put in by the
candidate will be worked out in the ratio of
2:3 for research put in before and after such
conversion.
How to Apply:
Admissions for Ph.D. programme can be
made four times in a year, i.e., January, April,
July and October. Applications can be down-
loaded from the University websie and sub-
mit the same with processing fee of Rs.500/-
(fee exempted for SC / ST) The application
forms will be available during the months of
December, March, June and September every
year for admitting the candidates for four
sessions. Candidates should submit their ap-
plications on or before the first working day
of a quarter, viz., January, April, July and Oc-

NIBMG is accepting applications from eli-
gible candidates to pursue doctoral research,
leading to a PhD degree, in the disciplines of
Biomedical Sciences at the institute under the
mentorship of NIBMG faculty. Research on
Biomedical Genomics encompasses research
on all aspects of genetics and genomics in re-
lation to human health and disease, as well as
validation by cellular and molecular biology
methods. A typical PhD student would get
opportunity to be trained in the cutting-edge
laboratory technologies as well as compu-
tational and statistical techniques. NIBMG
is currently engaged in several multi-center
collaborations and hence the students will
have exposure to inter-institutional environ-
ment. Specific projects will have lot of inter-
disciplinary components.

The minimum eligibility criteria for accept-
ing students at NIBMG to pursue research
leading to Ph.D. degree are:
Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
(Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular
Biology, Genetics, Statistics, Bioinformatics,
Zoology, Physiology, Biophysics or related
disciplines).
Candidates in general category must have
secured at least 55% aggregate in Master’s
degree. This will be relaxed for reserved cat-
egories as they are only required to success-
fully complete Master’s degree.
An applicant should have passed the NET
conducted by CSlR/UGC/lCMR/DBT/
NBHM AND must have a valid award letter
of Junior Research Fellowship from CSIR,
UGC, ICMR, DBT, NBHM. Candidates who
have qualified for Rajiv Gandhi National
Fellowship or any other fellowship for the
reserved categories are encouraged to apply.
Preference will be given to candidates with
demonstrable research training in the form of
summer training or short-term courses in
established research laboratories in prepa-
ration for a research career In biomedical
sciences. This condition is not applicable to
individuals belonging to reserved categories.
