Year 11 Chemistry Assessment Task 1 April/May 2018

Depth Study - Analytical Chemistry

Introduction
The Year 11 Chemistry Course requires you to conduct a Depth Study which gives you the
opportunity to investigate an area of Chemistry beyond the syllabus.
Your Depth Study this year will involve a pre-laboratory literature review, an excursion to the
Chemistry laboratories at UNSW where you will perform an analysis using some of the
analytical instruments available and a post laboratory report on your findings.
You will analyse a sample of water from a specific source for your laboratory work and use your
findings to complete a laboratory report.
Your Depth Study will commence in Week 10 of Term 1 Tuesday 3 April and completed in Week
2 Term 2 Friday 11 May 2018
Your excursion to UNSW Chemistry laboratories will be on Thursday 5April in Week 10 Term 1.
You will be given class time in Week 10 and 11 of Term 1 and Week 1 and 2 of Term 2 to
complete your Depth Study.

You must hand in a hardcopy to your class teacher and upload onto the
googledrive docs link that you will be sent at the start of Term 2:
1. Pre-laboratory literature review
2. Raw data and completed worksheets from the analysis performed during
your excursion
3. A Final Post-laboratory Report incorporating your findings.
By 3.05pm on Friday 11 May Week 2 Term 2.

Water Analysis
You may choose to use one sample from the sources provided or you may bring in 100 mL of a
sample from a source of your choice.

Design a question that you would like to answer from your analysis of your
water sample.
Pre-laboratory Work (10 marks)
Conduct a literature review (based on your question) evaluating the need to monitor water
quality in both an urban and non-urban environment.
Explain 3 common procedures that are used to analyse water samples in analytical laboratories.
You must use at least 3 different resources as a part of your literature review.
The Pre-laboratory literature review must be word-processed with a word limit of 1500 words
and include your list of references/bibliography.
Laboratory Work (10 marks)
You will be carrying out a titration with EDTA to analyse calcium ion concentration on a
sample of water and test the pH of your water sample using the pH probes available in the
Laboratories.
You will be sent a link to a google docs spreadsheet where you must choose TWO of the
other tests available ( One from Set A experiments and One from Set B experiments) by
the end of Week 9. There should be some students from each class conducting each of the
tests available so you can compare your results with other students in your class.
1. Collect a 100 mL sample of water from the specific sources available in the Laboratories.
2. All students or pair of students will perform one titration testing for hardness of water
with EDTA and a pH test with the probes available in the Laboratories.
3. Choose ONE of the method of analysis from Set A Experiments and ONE method of
analysis from Set B experiments as shown in the Table below and indicate your choice
on the google docs link you will be sent on Monday 26 March. There are limited spaces
for each experiment and you must indicate your choice by the end of Wednesday 28
March 2018.
Set A Experiments Set B Experiments
AAS for calcium Conductivity
AAS for magnesium Dissolved oxygen
Spectroscopy/Colourimetry for copper Nitrate tests

4. Conduct the analysis of your water sample following the instructions from the
worksheets provided at UNSW on the day of your visit.
5. Collect all relevant data and complete your Laboratory worksheet, including calculations.
6. Hand this to your teacher on the day of the visit before you leave the venue. It will be
returned to you in the next lesson in class.

Post Laboratory Work (40 marks)
Write a laboratory report to present your findings from the analysis of your water sample.
Your report must include:
Question/Hypothesis
Aim
Materials/Equipment
Method including risk assessment and variables where relevant
Results including tables, graphs, diagrams
Analysis/Discussion of results
Conclusion.
The report could include tables, graphs and diagrams.
The report must be word processed with a limit of 2500 words.

You must hand in a hardcopy to your class teacher and upload onto the
googledrive docs link that you will be sent at the start of Term 2:
7. Pre-laboratory literature review
8. Raw data and completed worksheets from the analysis performed during
your excursion
9. A Final Post-laboratory Report incorporating your findings.
By 3.05pm on Friday 11 May Week 2 Term 2.
