Animal Poster Board Rubric Student Name:

First Grade
Non-fiction Writing

Directions: Use this rubric to assess each students non-fiction writing and display of information on their
topic. Circle if the student is beginning, developing, accomplished or excellent in each specific area
based on their poster board. Give student a score out of a total 24 points.

Student Directions:
1. Today, we will be collecting research information about a topic that is interesting to you. Let’s
look at how different non-fiction writers present their information with their words and with
other features like captions, labels, and diagrams.
2. Pick one topic that you find the most interesting that you would want to reserach and tell your
peers about. For example, Polar Bears or Seals.
3. Find some facts about your topic that you find interesting and important to tell others. Facts are
some “wow” moments that we have found.
4. Write down some “wow” moments, captions or interesting ideas on your poster board.
5. Add pictures and labels to your poster to make your poster more interesting for your peers.
6. Think about which “wow moments” and pictures you would want to tell yours peers about
when you present your poster.

Purpose: To evaluate students non-fiction writing and display of information/ pictures about their
specific topic.
