Reliability, Replication and Validity

The study is cross-sectional research design - design entails the collection of data on more than
one case and at a single point in order to collect a body of quantitative or quantifiable data in
connection with two or more variables, which are then examined to detect patterns of
association. The criteria to evaluate the study are as discussed below;

1. Reliability

Reliability is concerned with the question of whether the results of a study are repeatable. The
term is commonly used in relation to the question of whether the measures that are devised for
concepts in business and management are consistent.

2. Replication

Replication is a term referring to the repetition of a research study, generally with different
situations and different subjects, to determine if the basic findings of the original study can be
generalized to other participants and circumstances. Obtaining statistically significant results in a
study is great, but when those same procedures and methods can be replicated with different
participants with the same results, that is even better. When studies are replicated and achieve the
same or similar results as the original study, it gives greater credence to the findings and means
that it is more likely that those results can be generalized to the larger population.

3. Validity

Validity is concerned with integrity of the conclusions that are generated from a piece of
research. The main types of validity and evaluation of study according to those criteria are as
follow;

a. Measurement Validity: It is concerned with whether a measure that is devised of a

concept that is supposed to be denoting.

b. Internal Validity: It relates mainly to the issue of causality. Internal validity in cross-
sectional design is weak. The study also does not show any casual relationship. So the
internal validity of the study is weak.

c. External Validity: It is concerned with the question of whether the results of study
can be generalized beyond the specific research context. In cross-sectional design
external validity is strong. The study is not only specific for selected sample or
targeted population. It can be generalize to all sectors who hire MBAs for job.
d. Ecological Validity: It is concerned with the question of whether social scientific
findings are applicable to people’s everyday, natural social settings. In cross-sectional
design, ecological validity is questionable. The study has strong ecological validity.
The study is applicable to corporate, government, public sectors, educational sectors s
well as students in their day to day decisions and work processes.
