Delivery system

Nuclear Bombs

The early form of delivery system is through the use of bombs. The weapon system is mounted
in an aircraft and dropped on a specific target. The problem with this method is that the aircraft
is prone to enemy fire and even in the explosion of the weapon. This weapon started the
atomic age. The first two nuclear bombs are the “Fat Man” Dropped on Nagasaki and “Little
Boy” Drop on Hiroshima.

ICBM

The ICBM or Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. The weapons system is based on the V2 Rocket
designed by Werner Von Braun during World War II as a conventional warhead. After the war,
NATO and the Soviets refined the idea by expanding the range, and using Nuclear warheads.
This weapon inflicted the greatest fear on both sides due to its extreme range, large numbers
and the size of the warhead itself.

SRBM

Short-Ranged Ballistic Missile is one of the smallest forms of Nuclear Weapons delivery system.
This weapons system is preferred by poor nations who wished to acquire nuclear weapons
because it is cheap and mobile. The most common SRBM is the Scud missile developed by the
Soviet Union during the Cold War, this weapon had been used during the Iran-Iraq War and the
Persian Gulf War. According to Wikipedea.com, Scud missiles are currently seeing service in
more than 12 countries.

Cruise missiles

Designed to be launched from land or sea, this weapon system is for attacking shorelines and
borders. It is the refinement of the V1 flying bomb used by Nazi Germany during World War II.
One example of this weapon is the Tomahawk Cruise missile. Originally used by the United
States Air Force, all of the Tomahawks serving in the United States military is now in the hands
of the United States Navy.During the Cold War, most of the Tomahawks have nuclear
warheads. But after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US military had either converted or
retired some of these weapons. It is preferred by field commanders because of its mobility (can
be launched from a ship, a submarine, or a pod launcher on the ground.) and its small size
gives it a small RADAR profile making it hard to detect.

The four weapons systems are some of the most common delivery system for nuclear
weapons. These systems were some of the most common weapons during the Cold War and
many have thought that these weapons will be used if World War II breaks out as quoted by
Albert Einstein “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will
be fought with sticks and stones.”
