Be Cautious of Dangerous Spring Ice Conditions

April 9, 2018 – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is asking residents to stay off any of the frozen bodies of
water in the area. As the temperature slowly increases ice conditions start to deteriorate and areas of
open water become visible.

“Water currents erode ice from underneath making it impossible to tell how thick ice actually is,” said
Fire Chief John Hay. “Slippery shorelines and river banks should also be avoided.”

In cold water the temperature of your heart, brain, and other vital organs drops, leading to a loss of
consciousness and drowning. It can also cause heart failure. Be safe and be smart, stay off the ice and
away from all bodies of water this spring.
