The Poisson's coefficient is an elastic constant that provides a measure of the sectional
narrowing of a prism of linear and isotropic elastic material when it is stretched
longitudinally and thins in the directions perpendicular to that of stretch. The name of this
coefficient was given in honor of the French physicist Simeon Poisson.
