2 Adding Integers Lesson

September 19th, 2017

Name: Allison Apone Unit Title: Chapter 1 – Integers

Subject/Content Area: Math 7 Lesson Plan Title: 1.2 Adding Integers
Time: 5th Hour (12:23pm – 1:20pm) [My
section of the lesson will last only 10-15
minutes]

Student’s Prior Knowledge

 Students have previously learned how to add and subtract whole numbers.
 Students know how to work with integer counters and number lines to add integers of
the same sign and integers of different signs.
 Students know that on a number line, positive numbers are to the right of 0 and
negative numbers are to the left of 0.

Unit Goals (Chapter 1 – Integers):

- Use and justify rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers.
- Find the absolute value of integers.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers.
Michigan Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1
Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and
subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical
number line diagram.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions
to multiply and divide rational numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.3
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational
numbers.

Lesson Goal (1.2 Adding Integers): Find the sum of two or more integers.
Objectives: Students will be able to add integers with the same sign.
Students will be able to add integers with different signs.
Students will be able to add more than two integers.
Michigan Common Core Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1.A
Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0. For example, a
hydrogen atom has 0 charge because its two constituents are oppositely charged.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1.D
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.

Instructional Materials: Smart board projector with assisting Smart Notebook presentation.
Focus Questions:
What is the rule for adding integers with the same sign?
What is the rule for adding integers with different signs?
What is the meaning of opposite?

Instructional Procedures and Learning Activities:

The instructional procedure for this lesson will follow straight from the lesson in the
textbook. An accompanying Smart Notebook presentation will be used to display information
to the students, which can also be seen directly in their textbook. On the pages following are
notes which will assist in the presentation of this lesson.
I will ask multiple questions throughout the lesson to check for student understanding.
These are also written on the next few pages throughout the lesson. After Example 1, there is
an “On Your Own” section with three problems. The students will copy these problems into
their notebooks and complete the problems. Then, after a few minutes, I will have volunteers
come up to write the answers on the board and we will talk about them.

Accommodations/Adaptions: For the more visual learners in the class, there are multiple visual
representations of the math throughout the presentation, such as number lines. All students
will create notecards to write the procedures of adding integers. The special education
students will be allowed to use this notecard on the test. The rule for adding integers with the
same sign and with different signs will be included.

Assessment/Evaluation: Students will informally be assessed multiple times throughout the

lesson. The “On Your Own” portion of the lesson will be one way I am able to evaluate the
student’s understanding. During this time of the lesson, I will walk about and check how
students are doing.

Closure: My part of the lesson will end after I finish explaining Example 2. I will end my part of
the lesson by asking “What questions do you have for me?”
