Resistance Moment Calculations (Columns: BS 8110)

Minimum Eccentricity
Even though only axial load is considered for the design of column, an allowance must be made for
the axial load acting at a nominal eccentricity.
At no section in a column should the design moment be taken as less than that produced by
considering the design ultimate axial load as acting at a minimum eccentricity emin

The minimum eccentricity emin is calculated as below:A

emin,x = MIN [0.05*h, 20mm]

emin,y = MIN [0.05*b, 20mm]

Where

emin,x = minimum eccentricity along major axis (x axis)

emin,y = minimum eccentricity along minor axis (y axis)

The design moment due to minimum eccentricity is calculated as below:

Mx,emin,x = minimum eccentricity moment about major axis (x axis)

= N*emin,x

My,emin,y = minimum eccentricity moment about minor axis (y axis)

= N*emin,y

Short columns
The design ultimate moment of braced short or unbraced short column at top, bottom and midfifth
span of column is obtained as below:

Mx = MAX [Mx,analysis, Mx,emin,x]

My = MAX [My,analysis, My,emin,y]

Slender columns
Additional Moments for Slender Columns:
For braced slender column it is necessary to consider additional moments induced by the lateral
deflection of the loaded column.

The additional moment are obtained as below:

Madd = N*αuA

αu = deflection of a rectangular or circular column at ULS

αu = βa*K*h If column bents about major axis (x

axis)

αu = βa*K*b If column bents about minor axis (y

axis)

Where
B
βa = (1/2000)*(le/b’)2

b’ = smaller dimension of column, except for biaxial bending

K = reduction factor that corrects the deflection to allow for the influence of axial
load

K = MIN [(Nuz – N)/( Nuz – Nbal), 1]C

Where

Nuz = design ultimate capacity of a section when subjected to axial load only

= 0.45*fcu*Ac + 0.87*fy*Asc

Nbal = design axial load capacity of a balanced section

= 0.25* fcu*b*h for symmetrically –reinforced

rectangular sectionD

= 0.196* fcu*d2 for circular sectionE

Note: Value of Nbal for all section shapes can be correctly obtained by interaction curve. Values stated
above for rectangular and circular section can be used for checking guidance only.

Where

Ac = net crosssectional area of concrete in a column

Asc = area of vertical reinforcement in a column

fcu = characteristic strength of concrete

fy = characteristic strength of reinforcement
