Male inflorescences narrow, once-branched, 6.57.5 em Tong, peduncle conspicuously flattened, 2.5~3.5 fem long, rachis 5~7 branched, each branch 5-8 ‘mm long; branchlets few, short, with flower clusters sessile toward the apex; vestiture of branchlets and flowers darkly ferruginous tomentose; bracts not seen; flowers arranged in clusters of about 25, pedicels lender, up to 3 mm long. Female inflorescences and fruits not seen. Virola steyermarkit has «close affinity with the allopatric V- officinalis, particularly in the nu ‘merous, close secondary nerves and in the narrow, ‘once-branched male inflorescence, but difers mainly by having a shorter androecium and androphore narrowed from the bottom toward the apex. Fur- ther, V. steyermarkit is known only from the type locality in Venezuela, very far from the restricted distribution of V. ofcinals in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Minas Gerais, ‘The new species is named in honor of the late Julian A. Steyermark for his valuable contributions to the study of the neotropical flora | am grateful to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation for the fellowship avearded to me in 1982 for continuation of my taxonomic studies of Myristicacene, to William Leite for drav- ing the plate, and to Brace Walker Nelson for reviewing the English translation, William A.
