Management of the Instructional Environment

carpet.
During the individual writing students will be seated at their desks.
Students will gather around the circle carpet to listen to classmates share.

Technology Integration
YouTube used for Five Senses Song, presented on SmartBoard.

Diversity and Equity (Accommodations, Modifications, Adaptations)

Visuals will be provided and modeled using the smart board and the chart paper.
Students will be provided with support as needed during writing.

Activities/Procedures

1. Teacher will introduce lesson by reading “Dear Hotdog,” the book will be covered with construction
paper and tape prior to reading to the class. Teacher will take care while reading to ensure that
students don’t peek at the pages.
2. Students will listen to the teacher read the book while using clues in the book to guess what object is
in each poem.
3. Teacher will call on students to guess and then ask who in the class agrees with that guess.
4. Teacher will tell students that before they practice how to make a “Five Sense Poem,” they will review
their five sense with the, “Five senses song,” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtwV9Mi_aNk).
5. Teacher will hand students small cups which will have a couple pieces of popcorn in each. Students will
be instructed to not eat the popcorn until they have thought about how it smells, feels like, sounds
like, looks like first. Then the students can taste the popcorn thinking about how they could describe
the taste.
6. Getting out the chart paper(this will already have the poem outline and format copied onto it), the
teacher will model how to write a Five Senses Poem about popcorn, calling on students to give
suggestions on describing words.
7. After completing the poem the teacher will tell the students that they will soon go back to their desk
to make their own. They students will be instructed to pick a food for their poem and complete the
Five Senses Poem with the provided worksheet. The teacher will continually walk around the room and
provide support when needed.
8. The teacher will choose students(time permitting) to share their poem while having their classmates
guess what food they were describing.
Reflections and Documentation/Evidence of Lesson Effectiveness
Overall, I believe that my lesson went well. There were several things however that I think I need to work
on or change. I thought that the kids were mostly engaged and I do not feel like I struggled with keeping their
attention. I tried to make sure I was changing or moving on from my lesson about every 5 minutes so they
would not get bored or off topic. I felt like I modeled the work sufficiently and they all knew what they were
going back to their seat to do. I wish I had done like a debrief of what we had just learned to make sure
everyone was on the same page, having a student or two explain what the just learned and then what they
were about to do themselves. I also think at the end of the lesson I should have tie it all together to make
sure they were clear on what we spent time learning today. I also think I should have been less strict on the
talking or not sitting criss-cross on the carpet. I felt like I was trying to make it perfect since someone was
observing me but I think it’s not realistic and I need to choose my battles with discipline. As for lesson
effectiveness I believe that using to proof of the poems the children made shows that the lesson was very
effective. If this were my own class I would teach it again with maybe a different subject as the focus for the
poem, I think it is a great way to practice and improve skills using the five senses as well as poetry.
