CHAPTER I

PREFACE

1.1. BACKGROUND

Lubricants have a very wide application in all lines of life, not least in the field of industry. This is
directly related to the maintenance and efficiency of industrial machinery. Lubrication plays a role of
friction reduction and as a heat-dissipator in two contacting areas. In the machining process, the
lubrication process can serve as a coolant to prevent heat defects that cause defects in the metal.

The lubricant may be a gaseous, liquid, semi-solid, or gas form which can freely accept forces of
mechanical equipment and prevent damage by abrasion and reduction of metallic or other components
by unlike expansion due to heat. But each type of lubricant has different capabilities under certain
conditions so that its application is also different. These conditions can be either large loading or
conditions on objects that experience friction at very high speeds. Differences conditions become one of
the main requirements in the selection of lubricant type because each type of lubricant has the
underlying characteristics of the ability possessed. Therefore, a comparative study of the type lubricant
tipt based on its form in which case study is used as a parameter is in the gearbox

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

I. Conclusion
In this study, the influence of lubricant viscosity and additives on the wear rate
of spur gear pairs was investigated experimentally. The gear specimens from a
comprehensive gear durability test program that includes seven different lubricants
were inspected to demonstrate the influence of the lubrication condition on gear tooth
surface wear. The results indicate that the wear rates are strongly related to the
viscosity of the lubricant. Lubricants with larger viscosity result in larger lambda ratios
and lower wear rates. Asimilar strong influence of the lubricant viscosity was previously
observed for surface fatigue lives as well. An exponential relationship between the
surface fatigue lives and the average wear rates was found. The data suggest that
viscosity plays a dominant role. There were also considerable differences in wear
amounts for three lubricants with differing additive packages but similar compositions
and viscosities.
II. Suggestions
After this study, We suggest in the implementation of oil analysis in the future, in order
to aid everyone to used the right oil for the gearbox. Therefore, it is expected to extend
the lifetime of the gearbox and to make good performance of the gearbox, then in order
to make sure a continuous production process, resulting in effective and quality
products.
THE METHOD
THE ANALYSYS AND RESULT
The main focus of the modern machinery industry is the achievement of the
best quality, dimensional accuracy or precision of machining results, surface
finish, high productivity, low wear rate, economical machining and improved
product performance while still considering environmental impact. Currently,
some consumer segments require component machining results with certain
roughness criteria, in addition demanding also that the component is
processed or done in a fast time. For example in shaft making, roughness is
required as small as possible and timing of work as quickly as possible.
