Internship Proposal

Fort Worthington Elementary/ Middle 2017-2018

Denise Green
Proposal
For my educational technology internship, I will be the leader for the effective implementation
of 1:1 devices (iPads) in the kindergarten classrooms at my school, Fort Worthington
Elementary/Middle School. This is our first year having 1:1 devices and many are not quite
sure how to use them effectively with classroom instruction. Our goal as a district is to
increase student literacy skills and one way to help with that is through effective
implementation of technology. As the leader, I will help
lead fellow kindergarten teachers in the effective use of iPads in the classroom, which is new
to our school. We will work together to make sure that we are getting the most use out of the
devices and ensure it is helping to meet the needs of all learners. We will work
collaboratively to discuss issues that may arise as well compare data to see if the devices are
making a positive impact or if modifications are necessary.

The three of us will meet monthly. I will be responsible for creating an agenda for each
meeting and making sure that we stick to the topics presented. The first meeting will be used
to share knowledge of what is already known about using iPads for literacy instruction to get
an idea of how much support is really needed. Staff will complete a brief survey to express
their needs or wants revolving around implementing technology. Once I review each survey, I
will use that information to help establish topics for each meeting. After the first initial meeting,
we will work collaboratively to figure out what is working and what isn’t and what changes we
can make to get better results. We will look at our baseline data for DIBELS and Amplify
testing and at the end of the year we will look at the data to compare and see if progress was
made with the use of iPads. As the district already requires progress monitoring we will bring
that data to each meeting and determine if progress is being made as well. Due to the fact
that this is our first time having 1:1 iPads in our classes, we will use last years’ data as a guide
to compare progression.

I will also provide two google hangout sessions per month to allow for extra support if needed.
This will be a “free time” for teachers to bring up any struggles they are having or just to get
ideas for effective device implementation. It will not be required, but optional to attend. After
each meeting, participants will be asked to complete a survey to describe the meetings
effectiveness and if any changes should be made in order to make the meetings more
effective.
Rationale
After becoming the first new 21st century school in Baltimore City, there has been a large
increase in the amount of technology resources available. With all of these new resources at
hand and many varying levels of experience with technology, I felt that I would be a great
leader to help guide my teaching team in using these resources effectively. With many
schools implementing a 1:1 device policy, there has been little instruction on how to do that
properly. Our school has an ambitious goal to increase our students success in literacy. The
basics of reading starts in kindergarten and if we can use the tools provided to make our
students even more successful, supports need to be put in place to make that happen. By
taking on the leadership role in implementing 1:1 iPads in the classroom effectively, I can help
provide the supports necessary to ease that transition for teachers who are not very familiar
with technology integration.

Learning Objectives
The learners will be the kindergarten teachers. With our main focus being literacy, we will
focus on the differents reading skills that can be addressed using multiple apps on the iPad.
We will review how an iPad works, how to introduce them to students and the expectations
that students must follow when using them. We will use our existing curriculum and determine
where we can use the iPads as an effective instructional tool. As we are just starting out, most
likely we will not all make it to the redefinition stage of the SAMR model, but that will be our
ultimate goal. Due to the fact that each classroom has their own iPad cart, we all have access
to the same tools, making it easier to implement the same ideas. The professional learning
objectives will be outlined at each meeting based on teacher needs. We will use the ISTE
teacher standards to guide our objectives for each meeting.

By having the staff identify their needs in regards to technology during the first meeting, I will
be able to identify where everyone is in regards to Ely’s Eight Conditions of Change. By
analyzing their responses, I will get an idea of what topics are necessary for our meetings to
make sure that we are all implementing the devices effectively. I want the staff to understand
that there is time for safe practice. Implementing devices should not be a stressful experience
but rather a learning experience that may take time. At each meeting we will reflect on what is
working and what is not to reflect on our implementation. I will use a reflection journal of my
own to record how the meetings are going and what progress is being made or if
modifications are necessary.

I will provide incentives for teachers who are implementing the devices to keep them
motivated. By having a choice in what is being learned it is hopeful that all staff will buy into
the implementation of devices and continue to use them daily. My hope is that we will make it
to the adaptation stage of the ACOT model having a strong influence on student achievement
through the use of technology. By working as a team, we will create a strong supportive
environment around the use of technology.
