Zain Javadd Malik[1][2] was born on 12 January 1993[3] in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.

[4][5] His
father, Yaser Malik, is British Pakistani, and his mother, Tricia Brannan Malik, is English, and of part Irish
descent. His mother converted to Islam upon marriage.[4][6][7] He has one older sister, Doniya, and two
younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa.[8][9] He was raised in a working class family,[4] and grew up in a
working-class neighbourhood.[10]

Born and raised in Bradford, Malik aspired to pursue a career in music from a young age leading him to
audition as a solo artist for the British reality television music competition The X Factor in 2010. After
being eliminated as a solo performer, Malik was brought back into the competition, along with four V
other contestants, to form the boy band that would become known as One Direction. During his time in
the group, the band released four commercially successful pop music albums.

Signing a solo recording contract with RCA Records, Malik split from the boy band in March 2015.
Adopting a more R&B music style, with his debut studio album Mind of Mine (2016) and its lead single,
"Pillowtalk", Malik became the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US
with a debut single and debut album. Malik is the recipient of several accolades, including an American
Music Award and two Teen Choice Awards.
