Changing the Administrative Password on the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

Summary – Linksys ROUTER

Changing the Password:

Note: EarthLink recommends changing the default password for any router for security
purposes.

1. Type the router's IP address in your browser address bar and hit the Enter key.
The default IP is 192.168.1.1.

2. You will receive a login prompt. Type in the current password for the router. If it is
still in default configuration, you will leave the User Name field blank and type
"admin" in the Password field to gain entry.
Note: If the password screen doesn't appear after you click enter, make sure the
ethernet cable from your computer to the router is in place. See KB article 3901 if you
need help connecting the devices properly. If the ethernet cable is connected properly,
restart your computer. If you still can't get to the password screen after you restart, see
KB article 4725 to set up your network control panel to use DHCP and then try again.

3. Once you have logged in, click on the Administration tab and then the Management
tab that appears underneath it:
4. Type the new password you would like in the Router Password field, and
retype it below in the confirmation field. Be sure to remember this
password, it will be necessary to log into the router to make any changes.

5. Hit the Save Settings button at the bottom of the screen.

For all versions of the Linksys WRT54G router, the default password is admin. The WRT54G
password is case sensitive.

The WRT54G default IP address is 192.168.1.1. It's through this address that you're able to
access the router's settings and options.

There is no default username for the WRT54G, meaning that you can and should leave this field
completely blank when logging in.

Note: All the default data mentioned applies to all versions of the WRT54G that might exist and
grants full administrator level privileges.

What to Do If the WRT54G Default Password Won't Work

If the password on your Linksys WRT54G has ever been changed (which is a good thing!) then
the default password of admin won't work. It doesn't stick around as a "backup" password or
anything like that.

Your best bet in this case is to reset your WRT54G router to its factory default settings, which
will restore all the configurations back to how it was when the router was first purchased,
including its password.

Note: Resetting a router is different than restarting or rebooting it. Restarting a router just means
to shut it down and then start it back up again, keeping all of its current settings intact in the
process.

Here's how to reset a Linksys WRT54G router:

1. Turn the WRT54G around so you have access to the back of the router.
2. Hold down the Reset button. You may need to use a pen or other small, pointy object to
access it.
3. Release the reset button after holding it for at least 30 seconds.
1. Unplug the WRT54G for a few seconds and then plug it back in.
2. Wait 60 seconds, giving the router time to boot up.
3. Connect the WRT54G router to your computer via a network cable.
4. Connect to the router using its default IP address, http://192.168.1.1/, and enter the
default password of admin.
5. Change the default router password from admin to something more secure. Be sure to
take note of the password this time! Storing it in a free password manager is a good idea.

Now that you've reset the router, you'll need to set up the wireless network again, plus
reconfigure any other settings you had set before. This includes everything from the wireless
password and network name to any custom DNS servers that were configured, static IP
addresses, port forwarding rules, etc.

When finished, I recommend using the built-in feature under the Administration > Backup
Configuration menu to back up the configurations. That way, you can easily restore them if you
ever have to reset the router again.

What to Do When You Can't Access the WRT54G Router

If 192.168.1.1 isn't the IP address that's configured for the router, it's less of an issue than if the
default password isn't correct. Fortunately, you don't have to reset the whole router just to find its
IP address.

Assuming the Linksys WRT54G you have has been working as your router, you probably have
several devices that have been connecting to it. Find one of those devices and check the IP
address configured as the default gateway.

Not sure how to do that? See How to Find Your Default Gateway IP Address for instructions on
doing this in Windows.

Linksys WRT54G Firmware & Manual Links

The latest firmware available for the WRT54G is available on the Linksys WRT54G Downloads
page, as are instructions for upgrading the router's firmware (here).

Important: Be sure to download the firmware that matches the hardware version of your
WRT54G router! The hardware version number can be found on the bottom of your router. If
there isn't a version number, then download the firmware for Hardware version 1.0.

The same firmware is likely used with all versions of the WRT54G router but it's still important
to select the right section on the download page before you click Download to get the firmware.
For example, if you have a version 2.0 router, make sure to choose Hardware version 2.0 on the
download page.

Here's a direct link to the Linksys WRT54G Manual, which is in the PDF format.
This manual applies to all hardware versions.

Everything else you could possibly want to know about your router can be found on its support
page on Linksys' website, Linksys WRT54G Support, including FAQs and numerous how-to
guides.

Huawei WebUI Explained; Home, Statistics,
SMS, Update, Settings, USSD etc
All the latest Huawei MiFi, routers, and Hi-link modems come with a WebUI.
All the WebUI are similar to each other and a few minor changes you can
find out. Suppose B310 router comes with a LAN port, then under the WebUI
you will get an additional option for Ethernet. In few WebUI’s you can get
USSD option, but in others you can not get the same feature. If you run
modified WebUI in your device, then you may find a USSD option, but in
most of universal WebUI’s Huawei has removed this feature.

Above WebUI screenshot is of my Huawei B310 router, on which I have put

WebUI version 17.100.05.01.74 of Australian Optus. I have explained, “How
to change the WebUI of Huawei B310 Router“. Basically, my B310 device
was locked to Airtel India, and there was no option to change the profile.
But, after changing the WebUI, I can now create a new profile according to
my choice. (A big thanks to Balwinder Singh for sharing this tips.)

Now have a look on WebUI version 17.100.08.01.983, which belongs to

E5573 MiFi. You can see there is no options for Ethernet.

You can access admin panel of Huawei devices at http://192.168.8.1 or

http://192.168.1.1; if you have not already changed. If you are using
Vodafone branded Huawei devices, then you will find address
http://192.168.0.1.

WebUI may have more than 5 Menu:

Home – It is the default page, where you will land after

browsing http://192.168.8.1 or http://192.168.1.1.
Formatted: Font: (Default) Verdana, 12 pt, Font color:
Custom Color(RGB(34,34,34))

Under Home menu, you will find out data received / sent, WLAN Status – On
/ Off, Current WLAN user, connection duration etc.

From here, you can shut down the device remotely, connect / disconnect
the internet, enable / disable WiFi Extender.
Formatted: Font: (Default) Verdana, 12 pt, Font color:
Custom Color(RGB(34,34,34))

Above the menu, it will show info about new recd SIM, network, WLAN
connected / disconnected, WLAN On / Off and Battery Status.

host from here.

SMS – To receive and send SMS.

Huawei server.
Settings
Settings menu is the most important in WebUI. It can be divided into more
than 5 sub-menu.

Under Quick Setup you can create a new profile or change default profile
according to the new network provider SIM card.

Dial-Up
Dial-Up is also divided into three sub-menu.

enable / disable data in roaming. It also allows you to disconnect the data
connection after a specific interval if there is no device using the internet.

What are APN Settings?

Access Point Names are composed of several settings. These settings are essentially
text fields that you must fill in in order to connect to data services. APNs exist because
carriers broadcast and receive data over government regulated radio frequencies. Each
phone must be specially configured to use these settings or otherwise potentially suffer
from data connection issues, such as the inability to send MMS or use mobile data.

The four most important APN settings are:

1. APN: Access Point Name for most MVNO carriers is “wholesale”. This is different
outside the US.
2. APN type: There are four APN types — generic, supl, mms and wap. These vary
from carrier to carrier. If you experience issues with official setup instructions,
“generic” is always a good default setting.
3. MMSC: This setting is required for MMS functionality for most MVNOs. It stands
for Multimedia Messaging Service. If you aren’t using MMS, this isn’t a required
feature.
4. Proxy: I haven’t used this in any of my MVNOs, but this may be required for
some carriers for data access.
When you receive the configuration settings, be aware that you don’t need to change
settings unless specifically prompted to. So, for example, if your MNC is set to 260, do
not change this unless your MVNO requires that you change it.

Configuring Your APN Settings

To get started configuring APN settings, go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks ->
More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. From here, you can configure your
device to function on your specific MVNO. This process varies slightly from Android
version to Android version, but more or less these are the steps that most people will
need to take to access their APN settings. One important note is that you must tap the
Menu button and choose to save your APN settings when you’re done entering them —
hitting the Back button will simply undo your work. Also erase, or write over, the default
APN settings.
I also include links to the specific APN settings setup tips from AirVoice Wireless, Ptel
Mobile and Straight Talk and some iPhone APN settings. There are also some links at
the end of this article covering APN settings for all major countries and carriers. If your
carrier isn’t covered here, you can try searching for your carrier + “APN settings”, which
will likely lead to setup instructions. You may also want to search for the appropriate
steps using your carrier’s setup instructions for data and MMS.

The other settings that you see do not need additional input. You can leave them as the
default or blank.
