Mini Lesson Plan

Intro To Multiplication
Math: 3rd Grade

Overview: The lesson will begin with a review and a series of questions to understand
where the level the students are at with multiplication. We’ll then continue with
explaining the basics of multiplication and continue to expand on it.

Standards:
● Common core - Multiply and divide within 100
● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.7
● http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/3/OA/C/7/

Objectives:
● The students will be able to formulate simple equations and solve from 0 to 100
● The students will be able to test their multiplication skills

Instructions:
1. I’ll begin with welcoming the students and asking how they are.
2. Begin to ask them what they know about multiplication and if they've worked with
it.
3. Ask them to get out their notebooks and begin to take notes
4. Go over basic instruction what multiplication mean how it relates to addition, and
simple problems.
a. Multiplication is similar to addition because you're adding the number with
itself multiple times.
i. Example - 2 x 4 = 4 + 4
5. Explain that anything times 0 will be 0 and anything times 1 will be that number.
6. Go to 2 multiples (everything is added to itself like addition)
7. 5 multiples (go up by five), 10 multiples (go up by 10’s), and 11’s (go up by 11).
8. After doing those examples on the whiteboard they will have practice to do on
their own. Which will be the assessment listed below.
9. After that if there is enough time we will play a game
10. They will get a bag of bottle caps with multiplication problems on it.
a. Directions for “Bottle Cap Multiplication“
● Place all caps upside down where the equation is facing down/ not
seen.
● Each group will grab a piece of paper to keep track of their score
● Once they flip over a cap they will solve the problem
● If they get the problem right they will the sum of the equation in
their points section
● At the end of the game when all the bottle caps have been used
add up your points and whoever has the most points wins.
11. Once everyone is done that will be the end of today's lesson, hand out the
homework and explain it's due tomorrow at we'll go over it at the beginning of
tomorrow's class. Tell them only do the ones you know because we haven't learned the
full table.

Assessment: They will write down four of their own problems on a seperate paper but
won’t solve them. They will switch papers with their neighbor and solve the problems
their neighbor came up with. After they are done they will turn it in so I can check if it's
right and if they learned.

Assignment: multiplication table worksheet for homework that we will go over at the
beginning of the next class.

Materials:
● Whiteboard
● Expo markers
● Bottle caps
● Score sheet
● Homework
● Pencils
● Paper

Technology:
● Computer to print out worksheets
● calculator for game when adding up points.
