Lesson Plan on Sorting for Science Methods

A: Informational Components

Lesson Title: Observing Using the Five Senses

Grade Level: 1st Grade

State Standards Connection:

Intended Learning Outcome:

o Standard 1- The Processes of Science, Communication of Science, and the Nature

of Science. Students will be able to apply scientific processes, communicate
scientific ideas effectively, and understand the nature of science.
o Objective 1- Generating Evidence: Using the processes of scientific investigation
(i.e. framing questions, designing investigations, conducting investigations,
collecting data, drawing conclusions)
o Indicator (c)- The Processes of Science, Communication of Science, and the
Nature of Science. Students will be able to apply scientific processes,
communicate scientific ideas effectively, and understand the nature of science.

State Standard

o Standard 3- Physical Science. Students will gain an understanding of Physical

Science through the study of the forces of motion and the properties of materials.
o Objective 2- Analyze objects and record their properties.
o Indicator (a)- Sort, classify, and chart objects by observable properties, e.g., size,
shape, color, and texture

Specific Lesson Objective: Students will make observations of different objects using their five
senses and descriptors.

Lesson Purpose: Students will recognize and be able to sort/tell the difference between a soft
thing vs. a hard thing, a sweet taste vs. a sour taste. The students will recognize how to use their
senses to understand the world around them.

Vocabulary Focus: Descriptors, the five senses

Materials: Bags:
Plastic water bottle with rice in it, 5 essential Bag 1: Plastic bottle with rice in it
oil bottles, cut up apples, orange juice in little Bag 2: Essential oils
test cups, enough paper at each station for Bag 3: Pens
every student, 3 stuffed animals, 5 pens, 5 bags Bag 4: Stuffed Animals
to put supplies in Bag 5: Orange juice in test cups
Anticipated Time Frame: 45 minutes (8:30-9:15am)

B: Instructional Procedures

Engage and Launch: 10 minutes

Teacher Role Student Role

 Have students get on the carpet in a  Use prior knowledge to remember and
circle. recall everything they know about
 Write a list on the whiteboard of all the descriptors and
different senses.  Volunteer when asked
 Tell them to close their eyes and feel  Engage in the topic and listen to
the carpet. Ask them to describe how instructions.
the carpet feels using descriptors.
 Next, pass out slices of apples in a
container and have then explain what
they taste, see, etc.
 Explain to them that we will be using
our senses and sorting skill to put
objects in groups.
 Do an example of pulling an object out
of a bag and using descriptors to
explain what it is.
 Make it clear that you want them to
guess what it is first and see if they are
right.

Explore: 20 minutes

Teacher Role Student Role

 Have a separate bag of water bottles in rice,  With their table, explore the different objects

 For the smell test, cover the label of the

 Call on someone to explain why it was

Evaluate/Assess: 0 minutes

Adaptations for Gifted/Talented, ELL and Special Education:

Gifted and Talented:

Have the students do every sense that makes sense for all the objects

Have them choose 3 of their own objects to use their senses and write it down on the
paper.

ELL:

Have an assigned partner within the group to help, and structure group work to make sure
the student(s) with language needs are given their turn to participate.

SPED:

Have an assigned partner within the group to help, and structure group work to make sure
the student(s) with special needs are given their turn to participate.
