PART – I
1)
a) State and discuss Saint – Venant’s principle.
b) Discuss about the thermo elastic stress-strain relations.
c) Differentiate between the following:
i) Homogeneous, Isotropic and Orthotropic materials
ii) Modulus of elasticity, Shear Modulus and Bulk Modulus
d) State and explain generalised Hooke’s law and write the relationships in matrix form.
e) State the stress-strain relations for plane stress and plane strain conditions.
PART – II
1) The following are the principal stress at a point in a stressed material. Taking E =
210kN/mm2 and μ = 0.3, calculate the volumetric strain and the Lame’s constants.
σx = 200N /mm , σy = 150N /mm , σz = 120N / mm .

2) The state of strain at a point is given by εx = 0.001, εy = -0.003, εz = γxy = 0, γxz = -0.004, γyz
= 0.001
Determine the stress tensor at this point. Take E = 210 x106 kN /m , Poisson’s ratio = 0.28. Also find

Lame’s constant.

Determine the strain tensor at this point. Take E = 210 x10 kN /m2 and μ = 0.3.
4) A rectangular strain rosette gives the data as below.
ε 0 =670 micrometres /m
ε 45 =330micrometres /m
ε 90 =150 micrometres / m
Find the principal stresses, σ1 and σ2, if E = 2 x105MPa, μ = 0.3
5) Strains for a state of plane stress are given by εx = -90x10-6, εy = -30x10-6, γxy = -120x10-6. If
the elastic constants for the structure are E = 209GPa and μ = 0.29, determine the complete
strain and stress matrices.
6) A state of plane stress exists at a point where εx = -300x10-6, εy = -100x10-6, γxy = -200x10-6.
If the elastic constants are E = 105GPa and μ = 0.3, determine the complete strain and stress
matrices.
7) Determine the stress matrix if the modulus of elasticity is 207 GPa , Poisson’s ratio is 0.3
and the strain matrix is

9) Given the stress matrix

(a) Determine the magnitude of the net stress on each of the x,y, and z faces.
(b) Determine the ner shear stress on each of the x, y, and z faces.
10) For a given steel, E = 200 GPa and G = 80 GPa. If the state of strain at a point within this material is
given by

ascertain the corresponding components of the stress tensor.


11) For a material with G = 80 GPa and E = 200 GPa determine the strain tensor for a state of stress

12) The distribution of stress in an aluminum machine component is given (in MPa) by

Calculate the state of strain at a point positioned at (1, 2, 4). Use E = 70GPa and μ = 0.3.
13) An aluminum alloy plate (E = 70GPa, μ = 1/3) of dimensions a= 300mm, b= 400mm, and
thickness t = 10mm is subjected to biaxial stresses as shown in fig. 13. Calculate the change
in (a) the length AB; (b) the volume of the plate.

14) The steel rectangular parallelepiped (E = 70GPa and μ = 0.3) shown in fig.14 has dimensions
a=200mm, b=200mm, and c=150mm. It is subjected to triaxial stresses σx = -60MPa σy = - ,

50MPa, σz = -40 MPa acting on the x, y, and z faces, respectively. Determine (a) the changes
Δa, Δb, and Δc in the dimensions of the block, and (b) the change ΔV in the volume.
15) At a point in an elastic body the principal strains ε3, ε2, ε1 are in the ration 3:4:5, the largest
principal stress is σ1=140MPa. Determine the ratio σ3:σ2:σ1 and the values of σ2 and σ3. Take μ
= 0.3 and E = 200 GPa.
