SIP Goal and Associated Strategies

Area for improvement and supporting data (key points from research paper; may also refer to state or county/district data):
In 21st century schools across the country, there is a growing emphasis on and strive for skill development and attainment for students. In a study on the benefits of STEM curriculum integration,
the authors assert, “many reports have warned that school education often failed to prepare our students to solve real-world problems because of the disconnected knowledge acquired from
individual school subjects” (Fan & Yu, 2015, p.2). In an effort to meet the academic benchmarks, the standards and their associated assessments call for students to demonstrate mastery in core
academic subjects, oftentimes in an applied manner (Park, Pearson, & Richardson, 2017).
We must begin to teach in ways where we put the learner into the curriculum, not the curriculum into the learner, because whatever the “purposes of education and ‘good’ teaching, they are made
visible through the decision-making processes in schools and in particular in relation to curriculum, the what, why, and how of learning” (Beal, Grady, Portelli, & Reilly, 2014, p.52). Thus, the topic

understand the relevance they have to their own lives. This curricular approach “ignores subject matter lines of delineation, thus allowing faculty to bring together the separate pieces of a
curriculum into a coherent whole that facilitates meaningful associations across subject matter” (Anderson, 2013).

goal By implementing Project Based Learning (PBL) as well as an Integrated Curriculum, we are preparing our students to meet the twenty-first century with preparedness and a repertoire of
skills they can use successfully.
The target is to implement integrated curriculum in ABC school, in order to deeper student understanding of the content, student preparation for future endeavors
and lifelong learning, and developing and applying skills for everyday life.
Target:

We will
have a professional development workshops held twice a month throughout this plan. After the workshop, teachers will apply what they learned in the classroom.
Administrators will observe teachers involved in curriculum integration before and after each workshop by using a rubric. A teacher teaching 2 periods of the same
course (1 period using curriculum integration and the other period not using curriculum integration) will give students exit tickets, tests, quizzes to see if anything is
Indicator: statistically different between both periods. When it is regularly statistically significant, we have half achieved our goal that integrated curriculum is better than a
traditional classroom learning. The other half is seeing scores of high-stakes testing. We will also give out surveys to students to measure student motivation
throughout the year. This feedback will determine the progression of student motivation throughout the next few years. After students graduate, they will be
contacted and be asked if integrated curriculum had a positive impact on their lives now, whether they are working or in college.
Plan/Do

Milestone date: August 2019 - July 2023

Goal 1 Improvement Strategies – Identify research-based strategies whenever possible.

1. It is crucial to get teachers buy-in and motivation to implement this integrate curriculum. As an experienced teacher who has implemented an integrated curriculum in her Mills
Park Middle school, Ms. Lee stressed the aspect of getting teachers on board and excited to implement this plan. She asserted in her interview that teachers must first be prepared
through “professional development, and a lot of it”. Therefore, our SIP team decided to engage teachers in school-based professional development workshops for rigorous teacher
training.

well as the instruction, assessments, and overall performance of the class. This is an effective way to experience and collect data hands-on to see what is being done in terms of the SIP plan
and whether teachers are effectively implementing the plan as well as how the students are receiving/accepting the instruction.
3) Program data can be collected on behalf of the teachers, and their ability to teach integratted curriculum, as well as their preparedness. The curriculum integration program at our school
can also be compared to other schools also using curriculum integration, and can be evaluated for effectiveness. 4)Student demographic data can be gathered through test scores, and
compared to past average scores and national average scores based on particular demographics. Each demographic can be analyzed for improvements in test scores, to evaluate the
effectivess of the integrated curriculum based on changes in test scores in each demographic.

At the beginning of the SIP plan, we will send out letters and automated phone calls to parents, students, administrators, and board of education members of the county. This letter will explain
our intent of Curriculum Integration and how it will benefit students, teachers, and how it will impact the relationship between teachers/students/parents for the time being.
Dissemination Plan

We will then send updates to administrators and board of education members every semester (2 per year; 8 total if 4 years) about test scores using curriculum integration. This will be presented
uses bar graphs to visualize previous data (pre-curriculum Integration) and current data (current curriculum integration). For the years 2-4, we will compare the results of first year curriculum
integration to the current year of curriculum integration and giving a presentation to the stakeholders.
Every year (for the plan), we will send updates to students and parents on any major updates about curriculum integration. This may include how test scores have shot up (or down, with an
explanation on how we can fix it) and how parents can get involved this in big project.
