TUTORIAL PLAN – Warm up

Unit: HPE 2203: Physical Performance Laboratory 3 Topic: Touch Rugby

Warm Up Activity #1

Stuck in the mud


Instructions Half the students have a ball, half don’t. Students are running
around with in the grid and 2 – 4, depending on numbers, are “it”. If
a student is tagged, someone with a ball rolls the ball between their
legs and they are free. If student who was standing still has a ball, it
is held above their head and must stay there.
Variation and  Instead of rolling the ball, students can pass it between
progression each other.
LEST  Learners – Students remain inside the grid. Those who are
‘it’ can be changed so everyone gets a turn.
 Equipment – 16 balls (class of 32), 4 cones
 Space – Large grassed area, 15m x 10m
 Time – 5 – 7 minutes

Organisation:
Rectangle can be re
used through entire
lesson so leave it set
up.

Warm Up Activity #2

Reaction Passing
Instructions Partners stand facing the same direction, 6m apart. Partner A calls
the name of partner B and B turns around to face partner A. Partner
A throws the ball and B reacts quickly to catch it.
Variation and  A throws the ball from the ground
progression  A throws the ball at different angles and speeds
LEST  Learners – Paired up
 Equipment – 16 balls (class of 32)
 Space – Lined up on grassed area
 Time – 5 mins

Warm Up Activity #3

Quick catch
Instructions Students stand will ball on their head then place their arms by their
side, tip their head forward and catch it.
Variation and  Spin around to catch the ball behind their back.

 Equipment – 16 balls (class of 32)
 Space – Free space
 Time – 5 mins

Organisation:
Students find a free
area to stand with
partner.

Warm Up Activity #4

Tag
Instructions 4 people are ‘it’ and don’t have a ball, everyone else has a ball.
When a student is tagged by someone who is it, they roll the ball
and become ‘it’, the student who tagged them is then free and has
the ball.
Variation and  Person picking up the ball doesn’t just scoop, they tap it and
progression then pick it up.
LEST  Learners – Running around within the grid
 Equipment – 28 balls (class of 32). If not enough balls are
available, can have more taggers.
 Space – 15m x 10m grid
 Time – 5 – 7 mins

Warm Up Activity #5

Rats and Rabbits


Instructions Students are tossing the ball to each other (students are
encouraged to stand side on as they pass the ball). When the
teacher blows the whistle, whichever partner has the ball, turns and
runs to the cones behind them, partner chases them.
Variation and  Add in scoring and a punishment for partner who comes
progression second as a motivation

 Equipment – 16 balls (class of 32), 8 cones
 Space – 20m x 15m
 Time – 5 mins

Warm Up Activity #6

Evasion Practice
Instructions Half of the students are attackers, half are defenders. Both lines
adjacent to defenders are try lines and attacker must try and score
at one of them. Attackers and defenders line up at the other line and

try both positions.
Variation and  Remove the longer line as a scoring option

LEST  Learners – lined up at diagonal corners
 Equipment – 16 balls (class of 32), 8 cones
 Space – 2 x grids at 7m x 10m
 Time – 7 mins
