3.1 Calculate the efficiency coefficient

Efficiency coefficient = Clear Opening

Width of Chamber

3.2 Compute the actual depth of flow and Velocity in the rack chamber at peak design flow.

The actual depth of flow in the rack Chamber upstream of the bar rack is calculated by
a) Energy Equation
Energy Equation with respect to two sections of channel is expressed by given equation .
(See Section 1 and 2 in figure)

L.H.S. = R.H.S.
Z1+d1+v12/2g -hL = Z2+d2+v22/2g
Where, Z1 & Z2 = height above the datum, (m)

3
Where, V1 & V2 = Velocity at section 1 and 2 (m/s)
Where,hL = Total Head loss, (m)
Where, d1 & d2 = Depth of flow at sections 1 and 2 , (m)

In This Example
hL = Ke(V12/2g-V22/2g)
Size of Gates provided = 400 x 400
Add headloss due to Gates = 0 m
Where Ke = Coefficient of Expansion

b) Using the Energy equation between section 1 in the incoming conduit and section 2.

hL1 = 0.056 m

c) The depth of velocity in the chamber is calculated by

trial and error from the Energy Equation.

d2+(V22/2g) = d3+(V32/2g)

This is Zero = 0.000

V3 = 0.52 m/s

3.3 Compute the head loss through the rack at 50%

Clogging.

a) At 50% Clogging of the rack , the clear area through

the rack is reduced to half & the head loss through
the rack is obtained from the Energy Equation

d2'+(v2'^2/2*g) = d3+(v3^2/2*g)+h50

Depth of flow and velocity in the

Where, d2' and v2' = chamber up stream of the rack at
50 % clogging.

h50 = Head loss through the rack at 50

% clogging.

b) The velocity & depth of flow in the channel below the rack are governed by the condition in
the outlet channel (the channel that carries the screened waste water.) Since the condition in
the outlet channel do not change, it can be assumed that d 3 and v3 are the same as
calculated for the clean rack 0.0729*((velocity through rack
c) h50 = opening)^2-v2'^2)

d) Velocity through rack opening at 50 % clogging = 0.0944

Err:511

f) d2'+(v2'^2/2*g) = d3+(v3^2/2*g)+h50

Solving by trial and error method

Considering d2' = 0.5245 m

This is Function

This is Zero = 0.00

V2' = 0.484 m/s

7
g) The head loss under 50% clogging

h50 = d2'-d3

h50 = 0.16 m

h) Velocity v' through rack opening

v' = 0.787 m/s

v' =
0.5245

v' = 1.501 m/s

When the screen opening become half-plugged. The area of flow is assumed to be half, and Velocity
i) through the screen is doubled.

h50 = 0.0729*((v')^2-(v2)^2)

h50 = 0.0729*((1.501)^2)-(0.484^2))

h50 = 0.15 m

Using governing Value of h50 = 0.16 m

Higher allowance of head loss given more conservative design.

3.4 Bottom Slope of the channel below the rack

3.4.1 Compute the critical depth flow.

a) For Rectangular channel critical depth. d c

dc = (Q^2)/(9.81*(b^2)))^(1/3)

dc = (0.0944^2)/(9.81*(0.5^2)))^(1/3)

dc = 0.154 m

8
b) Critical velocity vc = Q/(b*dc))

= Err:511

vc = 1.226 m/s

c) The critical depth generally occurs at a distance (3 to 10 )*d c from the point of free fall.

3.4.2 calculate the elevation of the channel bottom near free fall in the wet well.

a) Use Energy Equation between section 3 and section 4

Z3+d3+(v32/2*g) = (Z3+Zc)+dc+(vc2/2*g)

Zc = d3+((v3^2)/(2*g))-dc-((vc^2)/
