Competency 001: The beginning principal knows how to
establish and implement a shared vision and culture of high expectations for all stakeholders.
In this competency, I learned that it is very important to be able to
establish and implement a shared vision. A notable example of this would be parent meetings in which we inform parents of the expectations/visions for our school.
Another example would be the faculty meetings in which all staff
talk about a shared vision.
Competency 002: The beginning principal knows how to work
with stakeholders as key partners to support student learning.
In this competency, I learned about the importance of meeting as
a team (teachers and administration) to be able to achieve the desired goals for our students. This takes place by meeting and communicating all the expectations and a planned process which all of the stakeholders follow in order to meet the desired goals.
Competency 003: The beginning principal knows how to
collaboratively develop and implement high-quality instruction.
This competency is very important when developing goals for our
students. The beginning principal must make sure that she/he is meeting with the staff in a regular basis making sure they are on the same page regarding students’ goals. Competency 004: The beginning principal knows how to monitor and assess classroom instruction to promote teacher effectiveness and student achievement.
The observations done by the beginning principal are key factors
that contribute tremendously to feedback for the teachers that lead to student success.
Competency 005: The beginning principal knows how to provide
feedback, coaching, and professional development to staff through evaluation and supervision, knows how to reflect on his/her own practice, and strives to grow professionally.
Professional developments are essential in growing and striving to
develop as a professional each day. The beginning principal does this task as she/he reflects daily on the work of the employees.
Competency 006: The beginning teacher knows how to promote
high quality teaching by using selection, placement, and retention practices to promote teacher excellence and growth.
The beginning teacher reflects on the dedication of each staff
member. As he/she does this, the beginning teacher motivates each staff member through planned activities to promote teacher retention practices. Competency 007: The beginning principal knows how to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including selecting appropriate communication strategies for audiences.
A splendid example that I can apply in this competency would be
when the beginning teacher plans a career day for a campus. As the beginning teacher plans, he/she must develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders to make this event a success.
Competency 008: The beginning principal knows how to focus on
improving student outcomes through organizational collaboration, resiliency, and change management.
A big part of this competency is the reflection that is done in
faculty meetings as the staff and the beginning teacher unite together and collaborate as a team.
Competency 009: The beginning principal knows how to
collaborate determine goals and implement strategies aligned with the school vision that supports teacher effectiveness and positive student outcomes. EIT meetings are a great factor in developing this competency. The beginning teacher and the staff members determine goals as they all collaborate to accomplish the school vision.
Competency 010: The beginning principal knows how to provide
administrative leadership through resource management, policy implementation, and coordination of school operations and programs to ensure a safe learning environment.
It is very important for the beginning principal to provide a safe
learning environment. Therefore, there are several procedures that the beginning principal must make sure that the school if following through. For example, fire drills, shelter in place, front entrance security.
Competency 011: The beginning principal knows how to provide
ethical leadership by advocating for children and ensuring student access to effective educators, programs, and services.
This competency states the importance of advocating for our
students. Notable examples of this competency are the different referrals that get done by the teachers and that the beginning principal supports. The main purpose of these referrals is to be able to provide our students with the best education possible. For example, referring a student for dyslexia evaluation to be able to provide the student with the support that he/she needs.
