A 1ft cube of solid oak is held submerged by a tether as shown. Calculate the actual force of the
water on the bottom surface of the cube and the tensions in the tether.

Pressure on the surface:

PB= 0+Voil x 5 + Yw (3+1) (gage pressure)

= 0 + 0.8 x 62.4 x 5 + 62.4 x 4

= 499.2

PB= PB,gage + Patm

= 499.2 + 2116.8= 2616 lbf/ft^2

FB= PB X Abottom

= 2616 lbf/ft^2 x 1ft

= 2616 lbf

Pressure on the top surface:

PT= 2116.8 + 0.8 x 62.4 x 5 + 62.4 x 5

=2553.6 lbf/ft^2
FT= 2553.6 lbf/ft^2 x 1ft^2

=2553.6 lbf

Wt. of block, W= YoakV

= 0.77 x 63.4 x 1

= 48.1 lbf

For equilibrium in y direction:

∑ Fy = 0

FB - W- T – FT = 0

T = FB – W – FT FB
…………
= 2616 lbf-48.1 lbf -2553.6 lbf ……W

= 14.4 lbf
