1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.
Assignment-02
Term - 2
Instructions to students:
INTRODUCTION:
This assignment is aimed at preparing the students to apply engineering principles and methods for
the design and analysis of common machine elements under various loading conditions used in
machinery. Students will be trained to design machine components using prescribed standards,
correction factors and codes based on loading conditions. Design of mechanical components like
clutches, rope and chain drives and applications of curved beams will be discussed.
Part - A (10 Marks)
Friction clutches are used to transmit power from energy source to transmission system. Earlier
automobile applications used cone clutches for power transmission. This is mainly due to its
capability of transmitting higher power and torque at lower applied force for a given effective radius
of friction lining with same material. The only constrain is that the driving and driven shaft should be
perfectly coaxial to transmit the power efficiently. Due to this, nowadays single plate disc clutches
are commonly used to transmit the power as it is very robust in nature. But the size of the single disk
clutch plate increases with increase in torque/power transmission.
“Conical clutch are obsolete for present day power transmitting requirements”
B1.1 Selection of the material from Machine Design Online software with justification
B1.2 Calculation of module, number of teeth for the gear pair for static strength
B1.3 Gear blank design along with face width
Note: 1. Contact course leader for the values of P, N and Y
2. Include report generated by Machine Design Online software with your name
B-2: (10 Marks)
As the gear box is connected to the engine, it experiences dynamic load. Now carry out gear tooth
analysis considering dynamic load for the gear designed in B-1 and prepare a report. The report
should consist of following:
B3.1 Radial and axial forces acting on the bearing by assuming a suitable shaft diameter
B3.2 Dynamic load carrying capacity of bearing
B3.3 Bearing selection from standard bearing catalogue
B3.4 Comment on bearing life
B4.1 Calculate radial and axial load acting on the bearing by assuming a suitable shaft diameter.
B4.2 Calculate length of the bearing.
B4.3 Select suitable bearing material and lubricant with justification.
B4.4 Verify the sliding contact bearing design using Machine Design Online software and
comment on the results.
