In this unit we will explore Shakespeare and how he is still influencing people today. We will look
specifically at the play Rome and Juliet to analyze and interoperate Shakespearian language. Students will
have the opportunity to participate and practice their role-playing skills. They will have various activities and
plenty of discussion time to really understand what it is they are reading. They will be given a booklet that
contains questions for each scene, which where they will be expected to answer these questions in complete
sentences and provide examples when possible. Students will be continuously reminded about their literary
terms that they were given at the beginning of the year, and encouraged to look for them within the play. Each
student will have the opportunity to participate in the reading, as we will divide up the roles at the beginning
of each class. Each class students will be given a sticky not to place on our classroom timeline of the play.
They will reflect on what they learned from the previous scene so their peers can look at the timeline and be
reminded. There will be a final project in which student will get into groups of two and reenact a scene of
their choice. They will take pictures and create a storyboard to share with the rest of the class.
Rationale:
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous plays written, and for grade 10s, it is a great introduction to
Shakespeare. As adults, we might have forgotten how relevant the themes in Romeo and Juliet are to
adolescents who are most likely to relate to the drama of being in a new relationship. Romeo and Juliet is a
vibrant, interesting piece with themes of forbidden love, which these students may be able to relate with.
Living in a multicultural society means that sometimes there are pressures to date within one’s own culture so
the taboo relationship forbidden by parents is as relevant today as it ever was. Aside from the themes of the
play, the actual plot of Romeo and Juliet is exciting and easy to follow, and for grade 10s, its language is
challenging but not undoable. With an emphasis on fun, dramatic activities, and performance Romeo and
Juliet will be accessible, fun, and interesting to the students.
