Job Purpose:
The Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for stabilisation and optimisation of existing process
plants in the Group and operational responsibility for the technical specification of new process plants.
The over-arching purpose of this post is to provide a professional chemical engineering support service to
Plant Managers. The role may involve process design, but this is not seen as a primary activity, at
present. The role will best suit an experienced chemical engineer who is comfortable working directly with
operations people.
The initial focus will be the operations at the Indirect Thermal Desorption Unit (ITD) at Teesside and the
High Temperature Incinerator at Sandwich, but it is intended that the incumbent will also provide support
to other units across the UK, perhaps for extended periods of time during commissioning; so mobility and
flexibility to work across the UK would be necessary.
Responsibilities:
Process Support
To acquire a deep understanding of process technology; assuming the role of site expert at each
operation
To optimise the process; providing stable and cost-effective operations.
To troubleshoot, establish the root causes of process issues and implement effective corrective
and preventive actions
To identify ways of optimising operating & maintenance costs, including energy costs.
To develop process reporting systems, and ensure that this data is produced in a form that
informs the business and enables performance planning & continuous improvement
To specify technical requirements of new process equipment to deliver business case benefits
To contribute as technical expert to procurement processes
To coordinate commissioning activities
To identify and promote opportunities for improvement, including business cases for targeted
investments
Process Integrity
To support at each operation, as technical and engineering expert the local owner of the Process
Safety Management System including the Management of Change system.
To assist the Plant Manager in identifying & investigating near-misses, process upsets &
excursions, incidents and accidents.
To maintain engineering and process document management and control
To undertake internal audits of the process (and of other company operations, as requested)
To contribute to HAZOP processes as technical process engineering expert
Miscellaneous
This role is initially intended to prioritise support and improve operations at Port Clarence,
Teesside. It is expected that this will occupy the majority of the first year.
The balance of time in the first year will contribute to improvement work and investments planned
at the High Temperature Incinerator at Sandwich, Kent.
As operations at the Port Clarence plant are stabilised at the required performance, it is
anticipated that the incumbent will support other group operations. As many of these are located
at peripheral areas of the UK, it will not be feasible to commute for the extended periods of time
that may be necessary to achieve the level of support expected. It is therefore anticipated that
the incumbent will be mobile; willing to live away from home for periods of time.
The company operates at the technologically advanced end of the waste management industry,
dealing with unique and challenging waste streams. The role is therefore technically challenging
and will call for innovation whilst requiring a strong focus on process safety.
The company is seeking to develop an engineering career path to top management level.
The company operates many of its waste management contracts under non-disclosure
agreements; the incumbent should understand this constraint on his/her freedom to discuss their
work externally.
The incumbent should be free to work in the UK.
