Survey of the effect of odour impact on communities

1. The main objective of this study is to put together different survey researches in
the environmental research field. To provide a standardized evaluation of the
odour impact on communities, survey questionnaires were used.

2. The surrounding communities were surveyed to a radius of 3 km from the WWTP

(or in the case of the control, the coastline). The circumference of each marked
kilometre radius from the WWTP was divided into eight equally-sized zones that
encompassed residential areas. Each of these zones were given 30 randomly
distributed surveys, 720 in total.

3. How were the data collected? Are there specific point scaling or scoring in the
study? If so, what are they? Explain.
There were 3 major sites of interest in a major metropolitan area on the Eastern
Coast of Australia.
Site 1: Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) with a high number of community
complaints
Site 2: WWTP site with low number of community complaints
Site 3: A control site which means no nearby WWTP or other industry. It is
selected because of its comparable score for its Socio-Economic Indexes for
Areas (SEIFA). It has the same landscape with the WWTP (close to the sea) and
it is also within the city limits.

4. The areas of investigation, Site 1,2, and 3, are the quantitative variables in the
study. The quantitative variables in the study are the following: health, perceived
control, depression, the perception of odor impact, hedonic and attitudinal
appraisal of industry types, and demographics.

5.
F(1,135) = 1.67, p = 0.198, hp = 0.012.
F(1,135) = 1.08 p = 0.3, hp = 0.008. Perceived control and significance of
F(1,134) = 2.79, p = 0.097, hp = 0.02. odor impacts
F(1,134) = 3.16, p = 0.078, hp = 0.023.

Relative Frequencies (Observed and predicted) for assessing odor impact

(Table 2):
No 97, 13
Yes 4, 17
Percentage: 96.0, 56.7

6. A 31 item survey was conducted in these areas with questions pertaining to

health, percieved control, depressiom, perception of odour impact, hedonic and
attitudinal appraisal of industry types, and demographics. It was distributed via
post and hand delivery with the exception of industrial and commercial areas to
avoid confusion and simplify the results.

7. Based on the table 1, the factors that relate to odor impact and the data within
are the total numbers of respondents separated by the kind of survey/questions
that were conducted. The research supports the hypothesis that community
dissatisfaction is heavily modulated by the perception of odours in that
community attitudes of odour sources influence how they feel about the odours
themselves (Shusterman, 1999).

Descriptive Statistic

Mean 133.11

Median 131

Mode 131

Range 9

Population Variance 10.99

Standard deviation 3.31

The number of members of the involved community who were disrupted in their
day- to – day activities by odor impact caused by garbage and industries.
In this study, its oriented to the main study on how odor impact affects the
community, the slight difference is that it gives focus on how were they disrupted by the
odor and what activities were disrupted specifically by garbage and industries.
Step 1:
Set boundary for observation ( e.g. a village, urban city, etc.)
Step 2: Randomly select participants for survey inside the boundary
Step 3: Survey Analysis
Set standards for survey

 Annoyance
 What activity was disrupted because of the odor
 Is the odor bearable?
o If given the opportunity to move to another, malodor-less location,
should one be willing to move?
Step 4:
Distribute surveys to via post or hand delivery
