RATIONALE CC.1.2.9-10.A: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its

development over the course of the text, including how it emerges
and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective
summary of the text.

This standard will educate the student by picking out main points of
the text and give them an easy, visual way to separate the novel and
the film.

INTRODUCTION Activating Prior Knowledge

Ask the students to review the similarities and differences that

they discussed in class last week. Have a brief class
discussion on this topic.

Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set

Ask the students which film clip from last week was their
favorite - show that clip once more to the class.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION Big Idea Statement

and differences between two concepts.

How can you use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast
two different topics?

differences between the movie and book with at least 70%
accuracy.

Similarity - the state or fact of being similar

Difference - a point or way in which two things are not the
same
Venn Diagram - a diagram that shows the relationship
between two sets or things

Transition

A five minute warning (yellow card) and a one minute warning

(red card) will be given to the students before their break.

LESSON PROCEDURE Pre-Assessment of Students

Ask the students what similarity and difference means. Then

ask the students who has heard of the term Venn Diagram. If
anyone has, allow them to offer an explanation of what they
think it is.

Modeling of the Concept

Pull up the Venn Diagram on the SMART Board. Explain the

three different sections of the diagram to the whole class.
Allow for questions and clarifying comments.

Guiding the Practice

Hand out sentence strips to each of the students referring to

scenes from the novel, film, or both. Have the students read
their sentence strip out loud with assistance from the teacher
or one on one aids if necessary.

Accommodation: The sentence strips will be accompanied

by visual representations for students who struggle with
reading comprehension.
Providing Independent Practice

One by one, each student will go up to the Venn Diagram with

their sentence strip(s), and place it in the correct section using
tape.

Accommodation: Students with visual impairments or motor

impairments may have their aide accompany them to the
Venn Diagram.

Transition

Give the students one minute to stand up and stretch if

needed before moving on to the next activity.
