any claims to be perfect, at our church we come together to help
make the kingdom of God a reality on earth by loving God and

MEMBERSHIP AT ALDERSGATE CHURCH?
The local church is the most significant arena through which disciples of
Jesus Christ are made and Jesus’ disciples reach out into the world to
share God’s love. It is in and through the church that Jesus Christ is
proclaimed and professed as Lord and Savior. Please contact Pastor Rob
by telephone at 434-973-5806 or complete the communication card
found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate when it is passed
during the service if you wish to explore the meaning of membership in
the life of Aldersgate Church.
 For Our Youngest Friends
and Their Parents
A professionally staffed nursery is available for children birth
through age three during all services and Sunday School on the
lower level. An usher will be happy to direct you. Additionally, a
Parent Room is available in the Parlor adjacent to the Sanctuary,
for viewing and hearing all services. Please ask an usher to show
you the way. All restrooms are equipped with changing tables.
New Sunday School Study
Today, AGAPE Sunday School class will begin a new study. "I'd Like You
Better if You Were More Like Me! by John Ortberg is a DVD based study
with student books and will be facilitated by Jeanne Hamlin. We meet at
10:00 downstairs in Room 108. Please plan to join us as we learn more
about one of life’s most important questions: How can I get closer to
God and other people? We were created for deep connections. When
people have deep connections, says John Ortberg, they win in life. When
they don’t have deep connections, they cannot win in life. I’d Like You
More if You Were More like Me offers help in overcoming one of the
biggest obstacles to making deep connections: the fact that we’re so
different. Different from God and different from each other. An intimate
relationship with God and other people doesn’t have to be a cliché, it
can be a daily way of life. Come share in this new learning experience
with us.

24 Hours That Changed the World
New 6-week Study Begins Tuesday, February 20th
2 sessions: 10 am or 7 pm
No single event in human history has received
more attention than the suffering and crucifixion
of Jesus of Nazareth. In this Lenten study that will
begin on Tuesday, February 20th, author and
United Methodist Church pastor Adam Hamilton
guides us through the last twenty-four hours of
Jesus' life. Each weekly session is designed to help
the reader experience and understand the
significance of Jesus' suffering and death in a way
you may have never done before. Whether
readers are long-time Christians or simply curious
about the story of Christ's crucifixion, they are
invited to join the author in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus' life.
Weekly readings from Hamilton's book and weekly video will guide your
learning. Be part of the 24 Hours That Changed the World during Lent.
Charlottesville Winter District Youth Retreat
This year the District Winter Retreat for Middle and High School Youth
will be held at Westview on the James February 24-25, 2018. The
Theme is “OVERLOADED? COME TO JESUS.” This retreat will be filled
with fun, fellowship, and good food along way as we join in a wonderful
weekend together based on Matthew 11:28-30! Still not sure if you
want to go? Ask one of youth who went in November! So, come and
join us for the fun! Don’t miss out!

Gather with family and friends, before or after Sunday services, on
February 4th to enjoy fellowship while supporting our Youth Group in
Mission!
This year Aldersgate youth are participating in the “Souper Bowl of
Caring” on Super Bowl Sunday! The youth group will be selling Baked
Potatoes with various toppings, Baked Goods, and canned drinks. Net
proceeds will be directed to “Rise Against Hunger”. Our Goal is $160.
There are many ways to support the youth mission project:
• Buy a Baked Potato and join your friends or Sunday School for Lunch
in the Reed Room,
• Buy a meal to go, as take out will be available
• Buy a Drink and enjoy the fellowship with family
• Buy something sweet to eat now or for later
• Not Hungry or Thirsty? Offer a monetary donation for the mission
• Pray for our youth
• Speak to our youth and share positive words of affirmation for their
mission project.
Youth will take PRE-ORDERS beginning January 28, 2018.
On February 4th, during Sip and Chat coffee and hot tea will be offered;
however, our regular table of food will not be provided that you might
support our youth and their mission project. Thank you in advance for

Summer 2018 Youth Group
Summer will be here before we know it so mark your calendars!
On June 3rd at 5:00 PM, all Middle and High School youth who will be
participating in any of the Weekly Summer 2018 Youth Group Ministry
activities will need to plan to attend this Mandatory Meeting and Dinner
for parents and youth.
Adult Education Opportunity
An adult class is meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 10
am each Sunday. Our study will be a video series by
John Ortberg called If You Want To Walk On Water
You've Got To Get Out Of The Boat. This is a 6-video
series on learning to trust God. Discussion of the issues
will follow each video segment. Please join us!
Men’s PACEM Shelter
This year, Aldersgate will host the PACEM (People And Congregations
Engaged in Ministry) Men’s Shelter the week of Easter, Saturday March
31st - Saturday April 7th. This is a larger group than the women so there
are plenty of opportunities to help: greeting our guests as they arrive,
entertainment, helping in the kitchen, doing laundry, spending time
with our guests, and staying overnight. Hearty meals are greatly
appreciated. Last year, families, music ministries, and Bible study
groups, to name a few, provided meals for our guests and really enjoyed
it! Would your small group or class like to contribute? We can give you
ideas! Sign up sheets for volunteers and donation bins will be available
at the end of February. Needs include: small toiletries, socks,
underwear, new or gently used towels and wash cloths, men’s
magazines, individual non-perishable snacks, Chapstick, combs, and
lotions. Monetary donations will also be accepted for the purchase of
foods, paper goods, and other related expenses. Please makes checks
payable to AUMC with PACEM on the memo line. For more information,

 2018 Flower Calendar
Please consider donating a flower arrangement to our church this year.
The arrangements not only beautify the Sanctuary during worship but
they can hold special meaning for those who have provided them. The
2018 Flower Calendar is posted in the Reed Room. The bouquets are
created and delivered by New Leaf Florist at the cost of $40 each.
Payment can be made in advance by sending a check to the church
office or by putting it in an envelope and placing it in the offering plate
on the Sunday that your flowers are scheduled to appear. You may take
your flower arrangement home after the 11:00 service or leave it to be
taken to someone in need of comfort. For more information, please

In Memoriam
Joan Carrara
January 28, 3018
The Aldersgate family extends its deepest condolences to Joseph
Carrara at the passing of his wife, Joan. Expressions of Christian
sympathy may be sent to 256 Jefferson Drive W, Palmyra, VA 22963.
A service to honor Joan’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 7 at
12:30 pm in the Sanctuary. A reception will follow.
Sip ‘n Chat
We are in need of Sip ’n Chat host/hostess family or families for many
upcoming Sundays after the 9am and 11am service. If you could help,
please add your name to the sign up sheet in the Reed Room. Need

Jennifer Hamlin (Jennifer@eventswithpanache.com). Even if for one
Sunday at a time, we are happy to coordinate with a day that is
available. Never done sip and chat? We will walk you through the

United Methodist Men
Valentine’s Dinner
On Saturday, February 10 at 7pm, the UMM will be meeting at
Shadwell’s restaurant on Pantops for their annual Valentine’s Dinner.
This widely-attended event is a wonderful opportunity to bring your
wife, significant other, or friends and enjoy a nice dinner. For more

Join the Fellowship and Study of God's Word!
Paul's First Letters: A Study of Galatians and First Thessalonians
Our study covers what most scholars believe are not only the first
writings of Paul but also the first writings of the New Testament. Pastor
Rob Robertson is facilitating the class each Tuesday from 10:00 to
approximately 11:15am in the Choir Room. Everyone is invited to
attend whether this is your first study or you have been part of
numerous bible studies!

Children’s Easter Pageant March 17th
Calling Children and Youth:
This year we are looking for children and youth that would be interested
in participating in or helping with our Annual Celtic Night of Worship,
Saturday, March 17th at 7:00 PM. This year the children and youth will
present the production "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" which retells the
Passion story. Come join your friends and be apart of telling this
amazing story that change the world! If you are between 8 yrs and 18
yrs old and you would be interested in participating by sharing your gifts
and talents on stage or behind the scenes, please contact MaryAnne
