Math Lesson

Mini Lesson: Collect data and represent information with a graph

Grade: 3rd grade
Common Core Standards:
Represent and interpret data.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.B.3

Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve
one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in
scaled bar graphs.

Goal: Students will work together to collect data and represent the data with a bar graph
Objectives:
1. Working as a group, students will research a minimum of two business genres in a
specific location and collect the data they find.
2. Students will correctly record the data they collected on one big bar graph.
Materials:
iPads
Poster Board
Blank paper (for notes)
Writing utensils

Before: The teacher will guide a discussion with the students about businesses within 2 miles of

the school (restaurants, grocery stores, apartment buildings, fitness establishments, other schools,

business offices, etc.). The teacher will explain that there is an empty lot close to the school and

the students need to determine together as a class what type of establishment should go into that

lot. The teacher will explain what the students need to do on the iPads to determine the kinds of
establishments in the surrounding area. The teacher will model how to collect the data by using a

tally system. The students can use whatever form of data collection they prefer.

During: The students will break up into 3 groups. Each group will be given an iPad to use as a

research tool to look up local businesses. Each group will be assigned 2 different genres of

business (Group 1: restaurants & schools, Group 2: businesses (banks, law firms, etc.) & grocery

stores, Group 3: fitness establishments & shopping centers). The groups will research their

specified businesses and collect data regarding how many of those businesses are in the area.

This information will help them determine what kind of establishment they think should be put

in the empty lot. Each student in the group will be given a specific job for collecting data. Some

will research the establishments and read the data together, other students will work together to

write down the data that is found on the blank sheets of paper. They will be given about 10-15

minutes to collect the data.

After: The students attention will be called to the front of the room where there is a piece of
blank poster paper. The teacher will guide the students through drawing a chart for a bar graph.
Each group will take turns coming up to the board to graph the data they collected. After each
group has written down their data, we will analyze the data and discuss what kind of
establishment should go in the empty lot based on the results of the data collection.

Adaptations: Teacher will model how to record the data the students find. After the activity, the
teacher guides the students through making a bar graph.

Family/Home Connection: In an email blast at the beginning of the week, tell the
guardians/family member what the students will be doing for the week, including this activity.
Encourage them to point out various establishments in the surrounding area. Also have them help
their children identify the different kinds of establishments they notice.
