Dear Hiring Manager,

I was excited to see your job opening for an Measurement Science & Engineering Clerical Union
Undergrad Year Round and I hope to be invited for an interview.

Having recently studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark at Aalborg University Copenhagen and
working in a project team with a company named IVISYS, I believe I have the punctuality,
responsiveness, and thoroughness that you desire. In my experience in a project team my
communication skills developed in order to be as clear and concise to one another as possible. While on
this team I gained more experience in CAD software and rapid prototyping, using 3D printers and laser
cutters. Also I have the experience of working with CAD software such as SolidWorks, PTC Creo, and
Fusion 360 alongside some programming in MATLAB, Python, and C++.

I have two years of volunteer experience as a front desk attendant at San Juan Regional Medical Center
(SJRMC) in Farmington NM. While volunteering at SJRMC my responsibilities included answering
incoming phone calls, directing visitors to the correct location in the hospital, escorting visitors to the
correct department, delivering flowers and presents to patients, working with fellow volunteers and
ambassadors, and operating a computer to find patients within the hospital, all while maintaining the
patients privacy (HIPAA). I demonstrated the ability to handle tasks in a fast paced and ever-changing
environment.

I have 15 months of experience working at Best Buy as a Merchandising/Inventory Specialist. There I

am responsible for unloading product off of the shipment trucks, stocking shelves, assisting customers
and ensuring the customer’s experience was a pleasant as it possibly could be.

Alongside this, I previously worked with the Youth Conservation Corporation for 2 summers as a Youth
Worker. My responsibilities here were to work with my Team Leaders and fellow Youth Workers, mostly
in landscaping jobs. An example this past summer I worked with a team xeriscaping “islands” in a
parking lot. I demonstrated the ability to work with others and keep an open mind about other’s
opinions all while getting a common goal accomplished.

I am confident that I can offer you the customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills
that you are seeking. Feel free to call me anytime on my cell to arrange an interview. Thank you for your
time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Lucais Martin

Date: February 12, 2018

To: Crystal Zanders

From: Lucais Martin

Subject: Revised 1:3

I chose this internship at Sandia because I would love to obtain an entry level position
at Sandia National Labs. Given that this position is for undergraduate engineering
students I believe I would meet the application requirements suitably, thus giving me a
better chance of getting the position with my past experience. I would really like to get
an internship with Sandia because it is a very highly regarded place to get an internship
since it is a nationally recognized laboratory. With Sandia’s nationally known presence,
internships from them are highly sought after and it would be great for me after
graduation to have the experience on my resume.

The most challenging part of the is project for me was formatting my cover letter and
resume to be best suited for this position. I didn’t know which piece of information I
wanted to put first and foremost. I eventually decided on putting my experience abroad
first, especially since it was related to engineering and I worked on a project team. I felt
that since the job description itself said, “willingness to work with a team of
individually,” it was appropriate to put first. I also went to Sandia’s booth at the Career
fair on the 8th of February. The engineer I spoke to said he was impressed by what I
had on my resume and I feel that learning about resume formatting in this class really
helped me in achieving this praise. I put my most important experience first and the
less important stuff at the bottom. As we discussed in class, people looking at your
resume only read the first portion of your resume, usually giving it about a 10 second
glance over. Since I put my semester abroad first, it was the first thing that they saw
and talked to me about which is exactly what I wanted. From there we only talked
about that and not my other jobs which I consider less important.

What surprised me about this project was physically talking to an engineer from Sandia
at the career fair. Although this was not required for the assignment, it was because of
the assignment that I went to the career fair in the first place. I was surprised by how
optimistic he was about getting a position based on my resume. I hope I did everything
I could to get the position. The people I spoke to were very helpful and informative.
They informed me of how people from all educational backgrounds and standings get
internships at Sandia, and don’t let the requirements for each intimidate you. Basically
if you can really sell yourself and you have at least some experience, you have a fair
shot at obtaining an intern position at their lab. I guess I was expecting them to be
more harsh saying something like, “well we do get a lot of applicants.” I don’t really
know why I was thinking this, I believe it was because I know how competitive this sort
of thing can be. Whatever the case is I felt very welcomed by the representatives and
engineers I talked to at the UNM Career Fair.
If I had to do anything differently I think I would apply for multiple positions at once.
This would increase my chances of obtaining an internship, knowing that all internships
are competitive at Sandia. I am planning on applying for more internship positions at
Sandia after submitting this assignment.

The feedback I received from my classmates was exactly what I expected. They found
little grammatical and syntactical errors that I would have never caught otherwise. They
provided the constructive criticism that I was expecting to receive. Being able to carry
out this in person peer reviewing in my opinion is what made it so worthwhile.
Physically talking to someone about each other’s resume is very nice because you can
discuss exactly what you think is good and not so good about their documents, read
their body language and also handwrite any sort of critiques or comments directly on
their printed resumes. I agreed with all of the feedback I received from my classmates, I
felt that it was honest and very objective. I think they provided me the best possible
sort of feedback I could have received. I really enjoyed the fact that we had dedicated
class time to review each other’s work. No other place would really have this sort of
opportunity, and employers won’t give you constructive criticism on your resume if they
see it being unfit.

I would like to make my resume as short and sweet as possible to emulate my

classmate’s resumes. The resumes I saw in class were similar to mine, bullet points
with previous experience and then a short description beneath. Most of the
descriptions were a sentence or two. I had to shorten my descriptions while still
keeping the key information that was important in, which posed quite a challenge. The
key was to talk about the key aspects of the experience and leave out the more
unnecessary things.

I feel a lot more confident in the job hunting process because of this assignment and
after going to the career fair. Initially not knowing anything about how career fairs or
applying for internships, I was very intimidated. After going to UNM’s career fair and
talking to multiple engineering companies, I feel more at ease applying for these
positions. My misconception before was that companies are not really looking for
interns and more so for actual engineers with experience, but to my surprise this
wasn’t necessarily the case. Of course there are a companies only looking for actual
entry level or experienced engineers. However there are also companies striving to
“hire on” interns just as much as actual engineers. According to them this is because
interns sometimes provide an insight to a situation or problem that would otherwise
have never been brought up. The most important step to getting a position is getting
yourself out there in the job market and submitting applications. Every single one is a
learning experience. The only thing you can really do to set yourself behind the curve is
not apply and be intimidated like I initially was. The hardest part is initially getting
yourself out there to talk to reps and companies. From there you will only get better at
doing so and helping yourself.
