Instructional Objectives of this Unit
Rationale:
Commonwealth Caribbean countries are heavily dependent on tourism for their development and continued survival because it is the largest revenue earner in most territories. In
addition to contributing considerably to government revenue, Gross Domestic Product, foreign exchange and employment, tourism also holds the potential for increasing Regional
integration. In order for sustainability of the industry however it is important that the negative effects of tourism are discussed and minimised. As citizens of the Commonwealth
Caribbean it is important that students understand the nature of tourism, its impact on host countries and appreciate the role it plays in integrating countries because they will be
eventually charged with managing tourism for sustainability. Through subject content students will be introduced to issues facing the industry, understand their role as members of
the Caribbean community, appreciate the importance of the responsible use of resources and build awareness of the role of tourism in the development of the Region.
